Dean Stiles joined the San José State University baseball program in July 2016 as an assistant coach. 

Stiles spent the 2016 season as the pitching coach for Florida International University (FIU), helping pitcher Williams Durruthy get drafted in the 31st round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Prior to FIU, Stiles spent the 2012 to 2015 baseball seasons as the Oregon baseball program’s volunteer assistant coach in charge of pitching, in his second stint with the Ducks. Stiles was instrumental in the development of one of the top pitching staffs in the nation, helping lead the team to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. In Stiles’ first two seasons in 2012 and 2013 working with the Ducks’ pitchers, Oregon finished in the top 15 in the country with consecutive sub-3.00 ERAs.

Stiles’ first stint with the Ducks program spanned from 2009 to 2011 as an administrative assistant and bullpen coach.

While at Oregon, Stiles coached Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and Golden Spikes finalist Alex Keudell (2012), three All-America selections (Keudell - 2012 and Jimmie Sherfy - 2012 and 2013) and seven first-team all-conference selections (Keudell - 2012, , Sherfy - 2012 and 2013, Tommy Thorpe - 2013 and 2014, Jake Reed – 2014 and Garrett Cleavinger - 2015).

Since 2009, 28 pitchers that Stiles coached have been drafted by Major League Baseball teams including 14 in the top 10 rounds including first-rounder Tyler Anderson (Colorado Rockies) who is currently on the MLB roster. 

Following the 2015 season, Stiles served as the bullpen coach for the Eugene Emeralds, a Class-A (short season) affiliate for the Chicago Cubs.

Between his stints at Oregon, Stiles spent one season as the head coach at Lane Community College in Eugene. The Titans finished the year with a 26-20 record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Tournament.

Other coaching positions that Stiles’ has held include Tualatin High School (Ore.), Summit High School (Ore.), Crook County High School (Ore.), and St. Joseph High School (Calif.). Stiles was a high school administrator, teacher and coach in Oregon and California for more than 20 years.

In addition, Stiles has headed several 16U Junior Olympic Teams and NTIS USA Baseball teams. He served as the general manager for the Bend Bandits of the Western Baseball League before co-founding and coaching the Bend Elks of the West Coast League.

Stiles played infield at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Calif., before transferring to Oregon and finishing his career with the Ducks. He graduated with a degree in journalism in 1982, and in 1986 completed his secondary teaching credential at the University of Oregon College of Education.  In 1988, Stiles completed his Oregon secondary education teaching license at Lewis and Clark College.

Stiles has two sons, Taylor and Cooper, and a daughter Chloe.
