Orlando, Fla.----- In its first Universal Cheerleaders Association national championship at, San Jose State University advanced to the championship round and finished in eighth place.
The Spartans competed in the Small Coed Division I category for cheer teams that have four or fewer males in a performance. San Jose State was one of 15 entries and the only Pacific Time Zone institution among the eight teams to qualify for final round competition.
"To have this be our debut and make it to finals is a tremendous honor. The skill level of each team in our division is extremely high making the competition really tight. Competing in the semis and finals on the same day definitely was taxing on the athletes' bodies," says Kelvin Lam, the Spartans head coach for cheerleading.
"We finished eighth in the country just behind last year's national champions (Memphis). Thank you to everyone who supported us through this journey."
Purdue was crowned the national champion for the Small Coed Division I category. Ball State, UAB, Hofstra, Bowling Green, Arkansas State and Memphis also finished ahead of San Jose State in the championship final performance.
The Spartan cheer squad will be back in its entirety for the Wednesday, January 17 men's basketball home game vs. Nevada. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
San Jose State has one more national competition this year. The Spartans are competing in the United Spirit Association (USA) national championships, February 24 & 25, at the Anaheim Convention Center.
