Hello Spartan Nation:

"As always, we appreciate your commitment and support in moving San José State Athletics forward.

Recognizing that our loyal season ticket members may be impacted by recent changes in the federal tax laws that pertain to seat-related gifts, our team has worked diligently to create Shield 365, an annual priority points based membership program that will add value to your investment and provide year-round enjoyment for the Spartan faithful.  To help answer questions that you may have about recent changes in the tax laws, along with how our athletics department will adapt, please take a look at the following communication that my staff has put together.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Spartan Athletics. Spartan Up!"

- Director of Athletics, Marie Tuite

What is new in 2018?

In 2018, with our fans and community in mind, San José State Athletics will be introducing a number of new initiatives that create flexibility, increased value, a more enjoyable game-day experience and a year-round relationship with Spartan Athletics.  Some of the exciting new concepts we are introducing include a simplified seating chart for CEFCU Stadium, more affordable preferred parking on South Campus, and a new type of family ticket plan designed to be inclusive of a family of any size and a better fit for the Silicon Valley lifestyle.

Why is there a change in how donations are calculated?

In December of 2017, The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by the President of the United States.  The new law eliminates the 80% tax-deductible benefit for donations tied to ticket purchases and priority seating for intercollegiate athletics events.

How does this affect me?

If you were previously seated in a section that required a Spartan Foundation donation, the aggregate cost for those seats has not gone up, and in some cases, has even declined. While the name has changed to "contribution", those funds are still being utilized by the Athletics Department in the same way they were through the Spartan Foundation; supporting the academic and athletic pursuits of our student-athletes.

What is Spartan Athletics doing to address the tax law changes?

Spartan Athletics is constantly looking for ways to add value and increase the benefit of being a San José State Spartans Season Ticket Member (STM).  With that as our underlying motivation, we will be introducing a new priority points-based membership program for all STM's that will greatly enhance your experience and expand your involvement with Spartan Athletics at no additional cost to you.

We are calling it Shield 365 for the year-round experience you will enjoy! Shield 365 will complement one's philanthropic support of the Spartan Foundation, will offer a year-round connection to Spartan Athletics and provide unique experiences and special offers that will make being a Spartan STM the best value for family entertainment throughout the Bay Area.

Shield 365 benefits are in addition to what our STM's received in the past. You can continue to be confident that proceeds from ticket and parking sales are being responsibly deployed in support of our athletic programs and student-athletes. Our goal is to positively impact student-athletes' academic outcomes and elevate the competitive success of our athletic programs.

If you have already made a Spartan Foundation donation towards the 2018/19 fiscal year and would like a portion of your donation to be applied towards your 2018 Season Ticket contribution, please contact the ticket office at 408-924-SJTX (7589) and a member of our staff would be happy to assist you. Otherwise, you may log on to your season ticket member account at SJSUSpartans.com or contact us directly at the number above to secure your seats for the upcoming season.
