Contrades, Hufstetler Named Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes Of The Month

Junior outfielder and pitcher Kalei Contrades and sophomore infielder and designated player Jessie Hufstetler are the May Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the Month, presented by ScholarShare. It is the first Student-Athlete of the Month honor this year Hufstetler, and second consecutive award for Contrades.

Second Team All-Mountain West honoree, Contrades was 3-0 with a 2.39 ERA in 26 1/3 innings in May. He went for nine innings in two of his three starts, including a complete-game in the Spartans’ 11-3 victory over Air Force at the Mountain West Tournament. The Ewa Beach, Hawai'i native struck out a career-high 11 batters in the win, which was San José State's first in a conference tournament since 2011.

Hufstetler earned Third Team NFCA All-Pacific Region and Second Team All-Mountain West honors in May. She finished the 2014 season with the program's single season records for batting average (.441), on base percentage (.550), slugging percentage (.656) and intentional walks (3). The Atascadero, Calif., native batted .444 over the month with a .667 slugging percentage and drove in six runners in the season’s final six games.
