San Antonio, Texas - San Jose State University put the finishing touches on its program-best third-place finish on the final day of the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championship at the Josh Davis Natatorium. The Spartans were narrowly edged for the runner-up spot in the end by New Mexico State, accumulating 487 points to 494 by the Aggies. Boise State, in just its fourth year in existence as a women's swimming and diving program, won its first WAC title with 587 points. Nevada, which had won the previous three crowns, was fourth with 473 points. In each of fifth-year head coach Sage Hopkins' first four seasons in charge, San Jose State had finished a then-program-best fourth at the WAC Championship each time. "I couldn't be more happy with our placement," remarked Hopkins. "Our team just did a tremendous job. The way our team performed is the proudest moment in my professional life as a coach. The ladies just did a tremendous job, and we are thrilled to get our best-ever placement of third." On the final night, sophomore Heather Denman touched second in her attempt at defending her gold medal in the 200 backstroke, timing 1:58.72 in the championship final to just miss her own school mark of 1:58.54. Northern Arizona freshman Fi Connell posted a time of 1:57.50 to win it. Juniors Kirsten Trammell (2:17.44) and Caitlin Macky (2:19.19) were third and fifth, respectively, in the final of the 200 breaststroke. In the 100 free, freshman Kiley Foster (51.33) placed fifth while junior Meghan McCurley also picked up second-team All-WAC honors in eighth (52.16). San Jose State's 400 freestyle relay of freshman Marisa DeWames, McCurley, Denman and Foster timed 3:23.35, a new school record by almost two full seconds, to place second in the meet's final event, earning silver medals and second-team All-WAC distinction for all four swimmers. Senior tri-captain Hannah Tringham, in her final collegiate competition, took a second-team All-WAC spot in fifth in the 200 fly, swimming 2:04.77. Freshman Amy Kilby was 14th in the three-meter diving competition, posting a score of 221.00. San Jose State at 2010 WAC Championship Team Scores (Through 21 of 21 events):
