Lubbock, Texas. - Ryan Angel of the San Jose State University baseball team has been named to the 2007 Wallace Watch, released Monday, November 20, by the College Baseball Foundation. The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to the national college baseball player of the year.

Angel, a senior outfielder/infielder out of Rocklin, Calif., and Rocklin High School, played a total of five different positions for the Spartans in 2006. He led San Jose State in almost every offensive statistical category, and did not commit a single error in the field in 127 defensive chances, totaling the most chances without an error for a non-catcher in the entire Western Athletic Conference. Angel earned second-team All-WAC distinction at the end of the season. He finished with a .318 batting average, 74 hits, 43 runs scored, 20 doubles, five home runs, 36 runs batted in and 111 total bases, all team highs, while also swiping 16 bases.

Angel is among 148 baseball student-athletes named to the list, which is headed up by 12 returning members of last season’s CBF All-America Team. The Wallace Watch will be trimmed to 12 semifinalists by late May. The selection committee will then narrow the list to three finalists following the NCAA Super Regionals, prior to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The finalists, their head coaches, and their parents, will be invited to Lubbock, Texas, for a schedule of special events tied to the award banquet, which will again be nationally televised by Fox Sports Network and Fox College Sports.

The award is dedicated to the memory of Brooks Wallace, a former shortstop and assistant coach at Texas Tech.

A national panel of preeminent coaches, sports information directors, former winners, and beat media who most closely follow the sport, will select the College Baseball Foundation’s annual Brooks Wallace Award recipient.

This marks the second consecutive year in which a Spartan has been named to the Wallace Watch. Left-handed pitcher Branden Dewing received the distinction prior to his senior season in 2006. Dewing is now a member of the Oakland Athletics organization.

This is the second time in his career that Angel is getting honored by the College Baseball Foundation. He was previously named to the weekly CBF "National Honor Roll" on May 10, 2006.
