Niles, Ohio - Kyle Bellows made his professional baseball debut as the starting third baseman for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York-Penn League on Saturday, June 20. Bellows went 2-for-5 with one run scored and one run driven in from his No. 7 spot in the Scrapper batting order. Mahoning Valley is the Class A Short Season affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. In a six-run first inning for the Scrappers, Bellows hit a lined single to left field in his first professional at-bat, to load the bases, later scoring. Bellows struck out swinging, lined out to shortstop and struck out swinging in three subsequent plate appearances, and concluded his night by grounding an RBI single through the right side to cap the scoring in the eighth. The Scrappers won handily by the final score of 12-2 to improve to 2-0 on the young season. Bellows had travelled from San Jose to Ohio on Wednesday morning, June 17, to take a physical, sign a contract and begin his pro career. He did not play in Mahoning Valley's Friday night season opener, but becomes the first of San Jose State's large 2009 class to make his professional debut. It took Bellows just one day to notch his first game-winning RBI as a pro, in walk-off fashion as he lifted a sacrifice fly to center field with nobody out and teammates at the corners after back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the ninth inning, to bring home the only run of the contest in a 1-0 triumph on Sunday, June 21. The result capped Mahoning Valley's (3-0) weekend series sweep over the Jamestown (N.Y.) Jammers (0-3). He went 0-for-2 on the day with a pair of walks, one strikeout and the sacrifice fly, moving up to No. 3 in the Scrapper batting order. Follow Kyle's professional progress by clicking here. |
