DENVER – San Jose State quarterback Kyle Reed, who completed 80 percent of his passes and rushed for three touchdowns in the Spartans’ 35-10 win over San Diego State was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of The Week.
Reed, a junior from Oakland, Calif., completed 20-of-25 passes for 178 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns in San Jose State’s 35-10 win over San Diego State. He completed his first 13 passes of the game and helped direct the offense to a season-high 476 yards. San Jose State held the ball for just over 40 minutes of the game. Reed became the first Spartan quarterback in 25 years to rush for three touchdowns in a game. Boise State safety Jeron Johnson and Fresno State punter Robert Malone were named the conference’s defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively. Johnson, a sophomore from Compton, Calif. (Dominguez HS), had 13 tackles (8 solo), including 1.5 for a loss of one yard in the 20-7 win over Bowling Green. Johnson also broke up a pass and recovered two fumbles, both in the second half and both inside Boise State’s 30-yard line. Malone, a sophomore from Riverside, Calif. (Martin Luther King HS), punted four times for an average of 47.8 yards in the game against Wisconsin. He had a long of 51 yards in the final two minutes that was downed at the one-yard line. Others nominated on offense: senior running back Ian Johnson, Boise State. Also nominated on defense: sophomore linebacker Ben Jacobs, Fresno State; and junior defensive end Carl Ihenacho, San Jose State. Ihenacho had three of the Spartans’ four quarterback sacks, forced a San Diego State fumble and was credited with a quarterback hurry in the 35-10 win. He is the only player in the 120-team Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) who enters the week ranked in the top-10 nationally for forced fumbles (tied for first), quarterback sacks (tied for second) and tackles for loss (tied for seventh). Other special teams nominations: sophomore placekicker/punter Kyle Brotzman, Boise State. |
