Four student-athletes who earned President's Scholar designation and 37 more named Dean's Scholars were honored at the 50th annual San Jose State University Honors Convocation. The annual campus-wide event celebrating academic excellence occurred, Friday, April 20, at The Event Center. Approximately 3,200 San Jose State University undergraduate students will be honored. President's Scholars are those undergraduates with a 4.00 San Jose State grade-point average in two of the three most recent semesters. Dean's Scholars are undergraduates with a 3.65 or higher University grade-point average over the same 18 months. Water polo player Kelly Stewart, swimmer Darcie Anderson and gymnasts Shanice Howard and Lily Swann are the four Spartans to earn President's Scholar status for their academic performance. Howard and Stewart are two-time President Scholars. Among the 37 Dean's Scholars who are or were student-athletes, 14 earned the university academic honor for the second time. Thirteen of San Jose State's 16 sports programs had at least one representative. "Our athletics department and academic support staff take great pride in the accomplishments of our student-athletes who will be recognized at the 2012 SJSU Honors Convocation," says Liz Jarnigan, San Jose State associate athletics director and director of student-athlete success services.
