Indianapolis, Ind.-----The San Jose State University women's golf and women's swimming and diving programs are recipients of the NCAA's APR Public Recognition Awards for the 2010-11 academic year.

The annual APR (Academic Progress Rate) Public Recognition Awards recognizes the NCAA Division I athletics teams that earn an APR score in the top-10 percent of all squads in each sport. Now in its seventh year, the APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

For the Spartans' women's golf team, it is its third Public Recognition Award. The San Jose State women's swimming and diving earned its first NCAA academic honor.

WHAT IT MEANS & HOW THEY DO IT

"These two teams (women's golf and women's swimming and diving) are our best and the brightest. They have set the standard for our athletics programs at San Jose State," says interim director of athletics Marie Tuite.  "In addition to accomplishing great academic benchmarks, each of these programs are 2012 WAC champions. The discipline required to achieve athletics and academic success is a strong tribute to these student-athletes and their coaches."

"Each and every member of the team understands the importance of focusing upon academics and it is something we continually stress throughout the year. It is great to see the team recognized nationally for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to their education," says San Jose State women's swimming and diving coach Sage Hopkins. "I am honored to work with such a tremendous group of student-athletes."

"We set high standards for the women's golf team's academic performance. Then, it is their responsibility to achieve the standards. It's been a successful formula for us for a number of years," says San Jose State University women's golf coach John Dormann. "With the leadership of associate AD Liz Jarnigan, we have a program in place that fosters academic success by our entire student-athlete population."

BEST IN THE WAC & FAVORABLE COMPARISONS

With the two APR Public Recognition Awards, San Jose State's athletics program now has nine - the top figure among current Western Athletic Conference (WAC) members and best among the three California State University system schools (San Jose State, Fresno State and San Diego State) that compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision in the NCAA Division I classification.

The Spartans' nine awards also compare favorably among schools that will be in the Mountain West in July 2013. With today's announcement, Air Force now has 26 awards followed New Mexico's nine. None of the other Mountain West football-playing schools have more than five APR Public Recognition Awards.
