San Jose, Calif.----Student-athletes and coaches from San Jose State University's 16 athletics teams gathered in the Koret Athletic Training Center to recognize team and student-athlete achievements at the third annual Sammys. The Sammys, hosted by the San Jose State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), recognizes San Jose State's top achievements in competition, in the classroom and in the community during the year. Photos from the award ceremony can be found here. Head coach Wayne Wright and the gymnastics team took home top honors as the Spartan Cup Champion. The trophy is awarded to the team who collects the most points throughout the year in five Champs Life Skills areas: Athletic Excellence, Academic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development and Community Involvement. Softball was first runner-up and women's basketball was second runner-up and both received recognition and gift certificates for their efforts. Gymnastics also captured Sammys for Female Performance of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year, both awarded to Katie Valleau. Katie scored a career-best 9.900 in the floor exercise for a first-place tie at the NCAA Corvallis Regional. The junior from San Diego became the first Spartan event specialist to advance to the NCAA Championships. Adrian Oliver of men's basketball also swept in Male Performance of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year honors. Adrian scored a school record 42 points in 25 minutes against Puget Sound, broke school records for points in a half and consecutive 3-point baskets made. He was named to the College Basketball Insider All-American team, a first team All-Western Athletic Confernece (WAC) honoree and ranked third in the nation in scoring. The Sammy Female Team of the Year was awarded to women's golf. For the third consecutive year, women's golf won the WAC Women's Golf Championship. The Male Team of the Year Sammy went to men's basketball, which finished the season with 17 wins, most wins since 1981.
