The Spartans will face one of the top-10 defensive teams in the nation in the Military Bowl on December 27.
Bowling Green (8-4), one of the top defensive teams in the nation, is the San Jose State (10-2) opponent in the 2012 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman. The bowl game is December 27, at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., at 3:00 p.m. (EST) with ESPN providing the live television coverage.
The Spartans, 24th in the December 2 BCS standings, are taking a six-game winning streak into the post-season against the Falcons. Like San Jose State, Bowling Green was 5-7 in 2011 and ranks in the top-10 nationally in quarterback sacks. The Falcons, second in the Mid-American Conference's East Division, are ninth with 37.0 sacks and the Spartans are tied for fifth with 40.0.
In the NCAA's December 2 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) statistics, Bowling Green also is seventh in total defense and pass defense and ninth in scoring defense allowing just 15.8 points a game. Virginia Tech and Florida were the only teams this season to score more than their season scoring average when they played Bowling Green. Seven opponents - U. Mass (0), Eastern Michigan (3), Buffalo (7), Rhode Island (8), Akron (10) Miami, Ohio (12) and Idaho (13) failed to score two touchdowns in their game with the Falcons.
Both teams hold a win over Idaho. Bowling Green's first win of the season was a 27-13 homefield triumph. San Jose State became bowl-eligible with a 42-13 road win in Moscow.
