Hempstead, N.Y. (May 7)-----Former San Jose State University football offensive lineman Fred Koloto recently signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets. Koloto (Palo Alto, Calif., Palo Alto HS) was signed after the Jets' two-day rookie mini-camp. Fifty-six (56) rookies and first-year players were invited to the camp - 26 of them tryout prospects like the 300-pound five-year Spartan who was bidding for a free agent contract. The versatile San Jose State lineman was one of just two players offered a free agent contract to return to the Jets' full-squad minicamp in June. The other was former University of Tennessee quarterback Matt Simms - son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms. During his San Jose State career, Koloto played left tackle and left guard for the Spartans. He appeared in 43 games and started 32 times between the 2007 through 2011 seasons. Koloto is the fourth player from the 2011 Spartans to sign a free agent contract following the 2012 National Football League draft. Earlier, safety Duke Ihenacho with Denver, cornerback Peyton Thompson with Atlanta, and Mohamed Marah with San Diego signed a free agent contract. |
