Andy Ghiggeri and Deputy DIrector of Athletics John Poch were in Rome with the Spartans last summer.

Taking a look at Spartan Foundation fund drive captain Andy Ghiggeri by the numbers and the range goes from simple to stupendous.

  • Two degrees - a bachelor's and a master's degree that led to a teaching career right here in San Jose.

  • At least two decades as a Spartan Foundation fund drive team captain that equates to nearly $1-million in grass roots donations to the Spartan Foundation for student-athlete scholarships. This year, he's at the helm of the Green Archers.

"I love athletics even though I wasn't an athlete," says Ghiggeri, who is one of the most visible Spartan fans whether it's at home in Spartan Stadium or away from home. The Ghiggeri name can be found throughout the South Campus. In the Simpkins Stadium Center, take a peek outside the door of the offensive coordinator and at the acrylic donor presentations in the building's foyer.

"The flag flies for the University with our teams.  Books and athletics go together; it's part of the college experience.  Tailgating, marching bands and the pageantry make it special.  I have also met some wonderful people in the department over the years," he adds.

  • The one-time President of the San Jose State Quarterback Club has a current streak of attending 381 consecutive home and away football games starting with the then-highest scoring tie in NCAA history, 48-48 against Utah State in Jack Elway's 1979 coaching debut.

  • Since then, the Santa Clara County native has been in 54 cities in 26 states from Florida three times to Hawaii too many times to count. Madison, Wisc. (Wisconsin Badgers), Seattle, Wash. (Washington Huskies), Laramie, Wyo. (Wyoming Cowboys), Honolulu, Hawaii (Hawaii Rainbow Warriors), and Las Vegas (UNLV Rebels) are among his favorite destinations.

Ghiggeri points to the 1986 season and the 45-41 record-setting win over Fresno State in Spartan Stadium on October 4 as his #1-favorite among his current streak of unbroken attendance at San Jose State football games.

Keep in mind, Ghiggeri supports more football at San Jose State. He was an overseas companion with the men's basketball team in 2007 and 2011 when the Spartans toured England and Italy, respectively.

The Spartan Foundation thanks Andy Ghiggeri for his unwavering support of San Jose State Athletics. He can add two more football monuments to his all-time list this season when the Spartans head to the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas and Annapolis, Md., to take on the Naval Academy.
