|Osland T6th, Spartans T11th at NCAA Regional|
Erie, Colo.-Freshman Megan Osland continued her good play at the NCAA West Regional as she shot a one-over par 73 in the second round and is currently tied for sixth. She and Rachelle Reali helped San Jose State shoot a 298, and the Spartans are currently tied for 11th at the three-day tournament held at the Colorado National Golf Club.
After practicing and playing the first round of the tournament in near 80-degree weather, the Spartans found a change of weather on Friday morning. In just over 12 hours, the weather changed to the low 40 degrees and windy conditions this morning.
"We played in different conditions for the first two rounds," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "The wind was blowing, and it started raining during our round. We showed a lot of toughness out there with the changing conditions - wind, rain and cold."
Osland, from Kelowna, British Columbia, did not let the weather conditions bother her in the second round as she shot a team-best 73. She and the rest of her team started the day on hole 10. After two pars, Osland made three birdies, one bogey and three pars over the next seven holes to put herself two-under after nine holes.
Making the turn, Osland made two more pars before hole #3 where she three-putted for a six on the par-4 hole. She stayed even for the next three holes before a bogey on #7 left her at +3 on her last nine holes and a 73 on the day. Osland is currently tied for sixth at even-par 144.
"Megan had a fantastic round for us," said Dormann. "Her ball striking has gotten much better over the year and is paying off for her at this tournament."
Reali tied her best round of the year with a 74. She started her round strong with a birdie on her first hole of the day, #10. She then made four pars and a birdie to go two-under, but a bogey on #16 had her shooting one-under par for the first nine holes. After par on her 10th hole of the day, Reali had four consecutive bogeys before a birdie on #6 and three pars ended her round at 74.
"It is really good to be getting quality rounds from our #4 and #5 players that can help carry us. Now we just need to get all five players to put it all together in the same round," said Dormann.
Madeleine Ziegert started her second round with 14 consecutive pars before finishing bogey, birdie, bogey, double bogey for a 75 on the day. Jennifer Brumbaugh shot a 76 Friday with three birdies in her round. Kathleen Rojas rounded out the Spartan scoring with an 80 on a round that she made five birdies.
"We got off to a good start today and were even par as a team after the first nine holes," said Dormann. "Dana (Dormann) and I are very happy with our effort today and proud of the way they are representing San Jose State."
With the second-best score in the morning flight, San Jose State ended the day tied for 11th place at 600 with Tulsa and UC Davis. The top eight teams after Saturday's round advance to the NCAA Championships, May 22-25, in Franklin, Tenn. The Spartans are just three shots out of eighth place with four teams ahead of them. The top-two individuals, not on an advancing team, also advance to the championship.
Stanford leads the tournament at 580, followed by LSU at 581. Catherine O'Donnell from North Carolina leads the player leader board at five-under 139.
San Jose State begins play on Saturday at 12 p.m. MDT/11 a.m. PDT. The Spartans will play with Oklahoma and UNLV, starting on hole one of the second flight of teams to play.
