
| Spartans Playing Summer Ball Around the Country | |||||||

As June comes to a close San Jose State baseball players are off in the dead heat of summer league ball across the nation. Seventeen Spartans have blanketed the country from Alaska to New York for summer ball before returning to school in late August. Infielder Richie Johnson joined pitchers Kyle Hassna and Jason Kafka in Alameda, Calif., playing for the Neptune Beach Pearl. The team is 12-2 this season with three wins each for Hassna and Kafka. Another group of Spartans: Drew Bradshaw, Johnny Melero and Andrew Rodriguez are in the Far West League playing for the Humboldt Crabs. The Crabs are 14-4 this season with five combined wins in eight starts by Bradshaw and Melero. Kyle Gallegos is another one playing in the Pacific Northwest for the Bend Elks. Michael Gerlach joins Gallegos in the West Coast league playing for the Bellingham Bells. John Oberholtzer and Tim Quiery are in Maumee, Ohio with the Lake Erie Monarchs, a few hours up the freeway from the South Ohio Copperheads where Matt Lopez is playing. Nick Schulz is also playing in Ohio with the Licking County Settlers. Andre Mercurio and Jon Nelson are both playing in the state of New York. Mercurio, an outfielder, is with the Center Moriches Battlecats and the catcher Nelson is with the Shelter Island Bucks. Jacob Valdez plays in the Cape Cod League for the Cotuit Kettleers. DJ Slaton is pitching for the Green Bay Bullfrogs and Caleb Natov is playing for the Glacier Pilots in Anchorage, Alaska.
