Erie, Colo.-In the first round of her first NCAA regional, Megan Osland shot a one-under 71 to lead the San Jose State women's golf team to a tie for 12th place at 302 at the NCAA West Regional at the Colorado National Golf Club.
Osland, currently tied for fourth place, shot two under over the first nine holes and added two more birdies on the back nine to finish the day at 71. She shot just her second round under par this season.
Jennifer Brumbaugh shot a 75 on her round with 15 pars. Kathleen Rojas shot a 77 in her first round at an NCAA regional. Madeleine Ziegert shot a 70, while Rachelle Reali rounded out the scoring with an 84.
San Jose State is currently tied with UNLV, Iowa State and TCU in 12th. The top-eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships in Franklin, Tenn., May 22-25. The Spartans are just five shots out of a logjam at eighth. The team started the day strong, going +5 through the first nine holes, but the Spartans were +9 in the final nine holes.
"I am really proud of the way Megan played today in her first NCAA regional," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "She made a nice bunker save on the 18th hole to finish one under.
"However, we had a disappointing finish as a team. We did not make enough birdies today to offset our mistakes. Hopefully tomorrow, we have learned from our mistakes and can make more birdies."
San Jose State begins second round action on Friday morning on hole 10. The team starts teeing off at 8:25 a.m. MDT/7:25 a.m. PDT.
