SPARTAN NOTES: In his third season with the Spartans...right-handed pitcher who will be back in the weekend starting rotation for a third year and compete for the Friday night spot...is the grandson of Ed Sobczak, San Jose State University head baseball coach between 1957-69 and San Jose State Sports Hall of Fame inductee...two-time Academic All-WAC honoree and two-time San Jose State University Scholar-Athlete...earned a preseason All-WAC nod as one of three starting pitchers from Rivals.com and Yahoo! Sports.

2008: Went 4-2 with a team-best 4.06 ERA over 15 appearances, 14 of them starts, and just 19 walks against 51 strikeouts...produced three complete games and led the team with 84.1 innings pitched, sixth-best in the league...over his last eight appearances, seven of them starts, gave up 16 earned runs in 48.1 innings (2.98 ERA), with 31 strikeouts and two wins, including a complete game...retired the first 11 batters to start his home outing against No. 3 Stanford (5/4), with four strikeouts and six groundouts, and produced one of his finest performances in general that afternoon, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 7.2 frames, with eight strikeouts, before having to settle for a no-decision...went 2-2 with a 3.96 ERA over eight WAC outings...both his overall and WAC-only ERA numbers were fifth-best in the league...was masterful in two outings against Sacramento State, with a pair of complete-game victories...in the first one (3/15), allowed just one third-inning run, eight singles and one walk over 9.0 innings, striking out a career-high nine, setting the Hornets down in order in four frames, and getting the final batter looking at strike three to end the game...in a road meeting later (4/13), gave up an unearned run on eight singles and no walks over 9.0 innings, with six strikeouts and four more 1-2-3 frames...went 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 18.0 innings against the Hornets in all...won in his season debut, going 5.0 innings against Utah (2/23), and also at Washington State (4/27), when he threw 5.2 innings and gave up one run on seven hits and no walks, with four strikeouts...went at least 5.0 innings in 12 of his 14 starts...struck out at least six batters four times...picked up Outstanding Pitcher honors for a second straight year, from the Spartan coaches...only allowed four home runs all year, and just 2.03 walks per nine innings, 103rd in Division I...went 13.1 innings over three-plus outings without issuing a walk (4/6-20)...took the early part of the summer off before joining the San Diego Waves of the Western Baseball Association (WBA) South Division for the National Baseball Congress (NBC) Western Regional...helped the Waves to a 3-2 record at the tournament and ultimately traveled with them to the NBC World Series in Wichita, Kan., in August.

2007: Began his first year of major college baseball as the Spartan closer, collecting five saves and leading the WAC in the category for a number of weeks before moving into the starting rotation...finished with a 6-2 record, sharing the team lead for wins, and a team-best 3.86 ERA...made eight starts among a total of 22 appearances, with two complete games and one combined shutout...ERA was fifth best in the WAC...was tied for third in the WAC in saves, tied for fifth in opposing batting average (.272), tied for seventh in wins and tied for eighth in games finished (10)...produced a six-hit complete game, the first by a Spartan pitcher on the season, with six strikeouts in his first major college start, a 9-1 triumph at WAC foe Hawai’i (3/30), retiring 12 straight batters from the fifth through eighth innings and allowing a lone run in the ninth inning...first start earned him College Baseball Foundation National Honor Roll recognition (4/3)...also threw a six-hit complete game in his first WAC Tournament appearance, an 11-1 defeat of Louisiana Tech (5/24) in seven innings...went at least 5.2 innings in seven of eight starts...went 16.2 innings before issuing his first walk as a starting pitcher for the Spartans...major college single-game high of six strikeouts was achieved three times, at UH (3/30), at Nevada (4/14) and at home against Fresno State (5/4)...won in a starting role at Louisiana Tech (4/27), allowing two runs 6.2 frames...went seven strong innings to earn the win in the opener at New Mexico State (5/11) and kick off a crucial series sweep...ended up without a decision as the starter in a 5-3 home victory over Sacramento State (4/20), going 7.0 innings and giving up just five hits and two runs with no walks and five strikeouts...San Jose State went 6-2 in games he started, including 4-1 in Friday night WAC series openers...notched winning decisions in relief at home against Utah (2/18) with a perfect ninth, and at rival Santa Clara (3/3), throwing the final two frames of a 7-5 triumph in 11 innings...picked up his first save in his major college debut with two effective innings to close out a 6-5 victory over Saint Mary’s (2/3) in the Spartans’ home opener...added saves against UC Santa Barbara (2/10), California (2/20) and Washington State (3/8) at home, and at LMU (2/23), with three strikeouts and a combined one hit allowed in 4.1 shutout innings over the four games...first 13 appearances were all in relief, with seven of them scoreless stints...four of the 14 walks he issued on the year were intentional...was voted by teammates as the Outstanding Pitcher...did not pitch over the summer.

SKYLINE COLLEGE: Threw 119.1 innings in his only year at Skyline College in San Bruno, Calif. (Coach Dino Nomicos) in 2006...compiled a 2.34 ERA with eight wins (8-7) and 92 strikeouts, leading the team in each category...added one save...selected to the 2006 All-Coast Conference North Division first team.

JUNIPERO SERRA HIGH SCHOOL: Played baseball all four years at Serra High School (Coach Pete Jensen) in San Mateo, Calif., earning a pair of varsity letters...gained All-West Catholic Athletic League honorable mention and Serra’s Pitcher of the Year award as a senior in 2005, when he was 4-2 with a 2.26 ERA over 43 innings pitched, with 35 strikeouts and just six walks...also played one year of football as a freshman and earned a Coaches’ Award.

SCOTT: Majoring in communication studies with a minor in kinesiology...plans to pursue a career in professional baseball...hobbies include hockey, guitar, off-road racing, music and aviation...has one younger sister, Sarah...parents are Joseph and Anne Sobczak...Scott Henry Sobczak was born in Lancaster, Calif., on June 11, 1987.
