New York, N.Y.-----Ronnie Castillo, entering his fourth season as a San Jose State offensive lineman, is one of 44 centers listed on the 2009 Rimington Trophy Spring Watch List.
The Rimington Trophy recognizes the best center in the Football Bowl Subdivision and is named after one-time University of Nebraska center Dave Rimington, the first two-time consensus college player at the position. The 6-foot, 292-pound Castillo is the Spartans’ most experienced offensive lineman heading into the 2009 season. He has 21 major college starts since the 2006 season and has played both guard positions and center. In 2008, the three-year letter winner split time at center with Justin Paysinger and returning letterwinner Robbie Reed. Castillo is one of five centers from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) on the Spring Watch List. The WAC, Atlantic Coast Conference, Big-12 and Big Ten each have five centers on the List (click here). The Southeastern Conference leads all Football Bowl Subdivision conferences with six centers. The winner of the annual Rimington Trophy is named after the American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp Foundation, The Sporting News and the Football Writers Association of America select their respective All-America teams. This season’s recipient will be honored in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 16, 2009. |
