Fresno, Calif. - San Jose State University baseball players Branden Dewing and Ryan Angel have been named to the All-Western Athletic Conference second team, as voted on by the league’s seven head coaches. The announcement of the 15-player first and second teams, along with individual award winners, was made during a banquet at the Residence Dining Hall on the Fresno State campus, where the 2006 WAC Baseball Tournament gets under way on Thursday, May 25. Dewing, a senior left-hander out of Modesto, Calif., and Grace M. Davis High School, was chosen as one of three starting pitchers on the second team. He is fourth in the WAC with a 3.15 ERA, and is one of six league pitchers to have thrown over 100 innings this season. He takes a 7-5 record into the tournament, including two shutouts. “It’s an honor, but the main thing is that the season is not over yet,” said Dewing. “We still have a tournament to compete in. It’s satisfying and it is an honor, but we have to take it (to the rest of the WAC) this weekend.” A junior out of Rocklin, Calif., and Rocklin High School, Angel was selected for the utility spot on the second team. He has played five different positions over the course of the 2006 season, appearing at all three outfield positions, as well as at second and third base. He leads the Spartans in several offensive categories, including batting average (.319), runs (43), hits (72), doubles (20), home runs (5) and RBI (36). His 72 hits tie him for third in the WAC, while he is tied for the league lead in doubles. “It’s always nice to get an award like this,” remarked Angel. “It feels good to know that all of your hard work and dedication is paying off. It also means that you are helping your team to succeed, and that’s a good feeling as well.” The post-season all-conference honors are the first for both Spartans. Dewing and Angel were each named to the preseason All-WAC team prior to the start of the 2006 campaign. Fresno State shortstop Christian Vitters was named the “Player of the Year” and Hawai’i’s Steven Wright earned “Pitcher of the Year” honors. The “Freshman of the Year” award went to Louisiana Tech outfielder Jericho Jones. Hawai’i head coach Mike Trapasso was selected as “Coach of the Year” for the second time in his career. The third-seeded Spartans (33-24) will take on fourth-seeded Nevada (24-26) at 3:00 p.m. on the double-elimination tournament’s first day. All games throughout the four-day event will be held at Pete Beiden Field, with the winner gaining automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament. Fans can listen to all of San Jose State’s games through KSJS (90.5 FM), with Mike Chisholm and Rob Soul on the call. Live streaming audio and video for every game of the WAC Tournament will be available via WAC TV at wacsports.com. |
