Stockton, Calif. - San Jose State took an early lead against host Pacific in the Libby Matson Tournament championship game on Sunday, March 3, but lost 3-2 after on a pair of Tigers home runs.
The Spartans (13-6) went 4-1 at the tournament and have won 10 of their last 12 games. The team led the five-game tournament in hitting (43-for-139, 23 runs), pitching (1.60 ERA, 31 strikeouts) and fielding (.993 percentage).
Cheryl Freitas got the game's first run in the first. With two outs, Freitas blasted her first triple of the season to right field, driving in Devin Caldwell. It was the only three-base hit of the tournament.
Freitas was the Spartans' leader at the plate at the Libby Matson Tournament, going 7-for-15 with six RBI and five runs. She led all hitters at the tournament in runs scored and total bases (12).
San Jose State doubled its lead to 2-0 in the third. With the bases loaded on a single and back-to-back walks, Jessie Hufstetler singled through the left side, plating Caldwell.
But in the fourth, the Tigers (14-9) knotted the score. Taylor Petty knocked a two-run homer to left center. It was the first homerun the Spartans allowed since February 17 versus Idaho State (10 games). Leftfielder Megan Fogelsong's solo home run in the sixth gave Pacific a 3-2 lead.
Allison Lang pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and two runs. Amanda Pridmore (8-6) was charged with the loss pitching 3.2 innings in relief, striking out two and allowing two hits. Pridmore had a tournament-best 28 strikeouts.
San Jose State heads south on Thursday, March 14 to San Diego State's San Diego Classic II for games against San Diego State, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Harvard, Marist, Fairfield and Long Beach State.
