|Gymnastics Preseason Begins Sunday|
San Jose, Calif. - San Jose State women's gymnastics gets its first taste of the 2013 season on Sunday in front of a panel of celebrity judges. The team travels to Stanford to take on the Cardinal in the teams' annual Blue and Gold Exhibition Meet for a 1:30 p.m. start.
A group of guest judges will critique the meet, including former USSR gymnast Tatiana Lysenko, a 1992 Olympic two-time gold medalist. Stanford gymnast alum Natalie Foley, current Cardinal linebacker Trent Murphy, and two Stanford University staff members round out the panel.
Said San Jose State head coach Wayne Wright, "This event will give both teams a chance to see where they are early and to compete in a real setting."
The Spartans return six letterwinners from its 2012 squad that finished the season with the 17-best grade point average in the nation. The meet provides fans the opportunity to watch San Jose State's eight freshmen.
"We have a young team this year," Wright said. "We have a lot to do to prepare for the season but right now, we are in a good place.
"This meet will be a big test to see how the team can hold its composure outside of our gym."
The Spartans open the regular season in the Event Center on January 4 at 7:30 p.m. against Stanford, Sacramento State, and UC Davis.
