Stanford, Calif. ----- The San Jose State University doubles teams of Julianna Bacelar and Chau Truong and Sabastiani Leon Chao and Erica Medlin won their opening-round match highlighting the Spartans' best first day on record at ITA Northwest Regional Championship women's tennis tournament.

Leon Chao and Medlin defeated Cal's Kelly Chui and Alice Duranteau, 8-6. Truong and Bacelar topped Eastern Washington's Moira Hedberg and Kelsey Knight, 8-4.

 "The doubles played well," said head coach Sylvain Malroux. "I think we are on the right track to getting better results. Hopefully they will get enough rest. They are going to have to believe in themselves and since we don't start before nine, I think they will be ready for tomorrow (October 20)."

For the first time, based on available records, San Jose state won more matches than it lost on a first-day of an ITA Northwest Regional Championship that is annually hosted by Stanford. Overall, the Spartans posted six wins against five losses.

In singles play four of the five Spartan entries, Truong,  Leon Chao, Bacelar and Medlin earned straight-set wins in the round of 128 before losing in the round of 64. Medlin took USF's Andrea Ka to three sets before losing 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Play resumes Saturday, October 20, with San Jose State's doubles teams in action in the championship bracket and its five singles entries competing in the consolation bracket.
