
| Truong Leads Spartans At NIKE Invitational Tennis | |||||||

Berkeley, Calif.-----Senior Chau Truong won a pair of singles matches to advance to the quarterfinal round in the one of the three brackets at the NIKE Invitational women's tennis tournament. Truong, seeded fourth in her division, was a straight-set winner over Santa Clara University's Jessica Agra, 6-2, 6-1 and then returned later in the day to defeat teammate Erica Medlin in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. It was a busy day for the 4-foot-10 three-time letterwinner. She and Medlin, a sophomore, teamed in a first-round doubles match and lost to the University of San Francisco combo of Sofia Holmberg and Yurie Hashiguchi, 8-4. All four Spartan singles entries won at least one match in the championship bracket. Sebastiani Leon Chao, newcomer Julianna Bacelar and Medlin advanced to the round of 16 before losing. "We
did a good job in singles. Everyone won in the first round and we competed well for
the first tournament of the year," said San Jose State second-year coach
Sylvain Malroux. "I want to give a special mention to Chau, who is in the
quarterfinals. San Jose State's other doubles pair of Bacelar and Leon Chao also lost a first round match. Play continues September 29 with Truong bidding to advance to the championship semifinals in her division and the other entries competing in consolation bracket action.
