|Tennis Season Ends, Aggies Take A 4-2 Win|
Las Cruces, N.M. - The San Jose State women’s tennis team was eliminated in the first round of the WAC Championship Tournament, Thursday, April 26, by host New Mexico State, 4-2.
The Spartans started the day by taking the doubles point from the Aggies. Sabastiani Leon Chao/Erica Medlin edged New Mexico State’s Manon Sylvain/Natalia Salum, 8-6. Leon Chao/Medlin were the best duo on the Spartans this season, and one of the WAC’s best, amassing a 12-4 regular season dual doubles record. The Spartans then got another 8-6 victory from the freshmen tandem Jessica Willett/Isadora Busch over Ginet Pinero/Ros-Polly Nguyen.
With the score 1-0, San Jose State entered singles play needing three wins. Playing from the No. 6 position, Freshman Alexis Marquez was beaten in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, by Nguyen. The two teams then traded points, Medlin winning for San Jose State in the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 7-5, against Denise Van Der Ben, and Annemieke Witte for the Aggies, defeating Isadora Busch, 6-3, 6-3. Chau Truong then fell in a close battle with Pinero, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5.
In a must win scenario, Leon Chao locked up with Manon Sylvain. Leon Chao grabbed the first set quickly, 6-2, Sylvain survived to snatch a second set win, 7-6. In the tie break Sylvain sealed the victory for the Aggies, winning 6-1.
“That was a tough loss to take,” assistant coach Carolina Hannes said following the match. “Overall though this season was a great step forward for the program.”
A Spartans finished the year with their highest regular season WAC finish ever, 2nd. San Jose State also tied for the most wins, 13, since 1992 season, and highest winning percentage since 1986.
For the first time since the 2008 season the Spartans had a winning regular season record.
