|Water Polo Sweeps Two At Bronco Invite|
Santa Clara, Calif. - The #8 San Jose State women's water polo team ended a two-match losing streak on Saturday morning taking their opening match of the 2012 Bronco Invitational 10-5 over the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners and followed that up with a 16-6 victory against the Sonoma State Seawolves in the afternoon at the Sullivan Aquatic Center on the Santa Clara University campus.
Against CSU Bakersfield, Anna Natalizio equaled her single-game career high with four tallies. The Spartans took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back outscoring the Roadrunners in each period en route to their 10-5 win.
In addition to Natalizio, six Spartans scored a goal each; Katie Buzzetta, Victoria Smith, Rachel Henry, Ally Waasted, Christina Kouvousis and Kimber Methvin. Meagan Minson played the entire game in goal and made seven saves.
"We played well in both matches, but I was hoping we would be more consistent in the first match," head coach Lou Tully said. "In the second match we were able to do more of what we wanted."
The Spartans, in their second match, had six players score multiple goals led by Henry's three. Waasted, Dani Curran, Smith, Allie Stewart, and Natalizio each had two goals. Kouvousis, Buzzeta and Dani Styles scored one goal each.
The Spartans used three goalkeepers against Sonoma State with Minson making two saves in the first quarter. Maddie Reardon, playing the second and third periods, had five and Katie Lind stopped two shots playing the fourth period.
Curran's two goals and Natalizio's six on the day left them tied for the team lead with 49 on the season.
"Anna (Natalizio) played well in both matches as did Dani (Curran). Dani was moving the ball around and made some great passes which led to 12 goals."
"Against Sonoma State we were able to spread our scoring out, which makes it harder for opponents to key on specific players. We had a strong counter attack and that led to most of our scoring."
The Spartans wrap up tournament action tomorrow, Sunday, April 15 with matches against Colorado State at 10:00 a.m. and host Santa Clara at 5:00 p.m.
