|No. 55 Hawai'i End Tennis Win Streak|
Honolulu, Hawai’i – San Jose State women’s tennis team record winning streak was stopped by No. 55 Hawai’i, 7-0, on Sunday, April 8. It was the first time since February 11 that the Spartans dropped a contest.
The Spartans (13-4, 3-1 WAC) started with three losses in doubles. Playing from the No. 1 position, Sabastiani Leon Chao/Erica Medlin fell to Hawai’i’s Katarina Poljakova/Jamie Pawid, 8-1. It was the San Jose State tandems’ third dual doubles loss of the season.
“Unfortunately this run had to end at some point,” first year head coach Sylvain Malroux said. “Playing Hawai’i was a good learning experience for us to get ready for the WAC Championship.”
Hawai’i (11-6, 2-1 WAC) had five straight set victories in singles. Playing from the No. 1 position, Leon Chao battled with Barbara Pinterova. After falling in the first set, 6-2, Leon Chao took the second, 2-6. In a long third set Pinterova prevailed with the tie breaker, 10-8.
The loss breaks San Jose State’s longest win streak in program history. During the run the Spartans had 10 consecutive singles match victories from junior Chau Truong and 11 straight dual doubles wins from Leon Chao/Medlin. San Jose State peaked at 13-3, ten games above an even record, a feat not accomplished since the 1986 season.
Up next the Spartans will finish their regular season, road schedule on Sunday, April 15, at UC Davis. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start time in Davis, Calif.
