|Come-From-Behind Win Extends Streak To 12|
Hawaii -- San Jose State women’s tennis won its 12th consecutive match
Saturday, April 7, in a 5-2 come-from-behind victory over Utah State.
Jose State needed to win four out of six singles matches to secure the victory.
With the Spartans ahead, 3-2, Sabastiani Leon Chao finished her straight-set triumph over
Jaci West, 6-1, 6-2, to ensure the win. Leon Chao
earned her team leading, 12th singles dual match win of the year and fifth in a row.
“I thought our singles team really performed today, and they needed to,” head coach Sylvain Malroux said. “For the first time in awhile, our doubles didn’t look good. That challenged our singles play which delivered.”
The other two singles wins came from freshmen Jessica Willett and Alexis Marquez. Willett beat Romina Nedakovic, in the only match that lasted three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Marquez handled Julie Tukuafu, 6-1, 6-4.
“After doubles, we all came out strong and pulled together to get this victory,” Medlin said following the win over Utah State (8-9, 1-3 WAC). “We made sure to come out aggressive and play as we always do in order to get the win.”
In doubles, San Jose State lost two out of three matches for the first time since playing Cal Poly on February 11. The lone win for the Spartans’ doubles came from Busch/Willett over Tukuafu/Rowland, 8-7.
The first-place Spartans return to action on April 8 in another WAC match against No. 53 Hawai’i (10-6, 1-1 WAC). That game is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Hawaiian time. It will be the final game in a stretch of 11 straight at home for the Rainbow Wahine.
