Santa Clara, Calif. -- The San Jose State women’s tennis team won their sixth straight match on Friday, March 11, 2012, defeating the Academy of Art, 7-0. It is the first time since the 1986 season that a Spartan women’s tennis team has won six in a row. The 1986 team went on to win seven straight matches before their streak was halted. With rain in the forecast, San Jose State (7-3) began with singles play. Leading from the No. 1 position, Sabastiani Leon Chao beat Kunkanda Phukchampa in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Four other Spartans singles players took down their opponent in straight set victories. Junior Chau Truong, who won her sixth consecutive dual singles contest, jumped up to the No. 2 spot for the match outplaying Amal Ben El Hadj 6-2, 6-1. “They were great today, that is all I can say,” head coach Sylvain Malroux commented following the match. “The team didn’t let the weather dictate their intensity and drive for a win.” Malroux went on to add, “It was nice to get a match in, we needed it, we didn’t want to go to Las Vegas without playing the week before.” The doubles pairings were undefeated as well. Leon Chao/Erica Medlin won their sixth dual doubles contest in a row over Kunkanda/Ben El Hadj, 8-1. Truong/Alexis Marquez took down Diane Phan/Daniela Amelunge Antelo, 8-4. The third doubles match between Isadora Busch/Jessica Willett and Jenny Johansson/Paola Correa Fe, was called midway through due to rain, the score at the time was, 6-5 in favor of SJSU. San Jose State now has a six match winning streak. They will look to take it to a San Jose State record tying seven this Friday, March 23, against Drake. Malroux ended by saying, “I am proud of these girls already and to have a streak like this is so great for our program.” The match is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. in Las Vegas.
