|Tennis Goes For Six In A Row|
The San Jose State women’s tennis team (6-3) will play two home matches this week against members of the Pacific West Conference. First the Dominican University Penguins (2-8), on Wednesday, March 14, and the Academy of Art Urban Knights (8-5), on Friday, March 16.
San Jose State record: 6-3, 1-0 WAC. The Spartans are on a five-match winning streak after beating University of the Pacific and Southern Utah University. San Jose State is 3-2 this season at home.
Dominican University record: 2-8. The Penguins have lost three straight contests. Their last win came against Notre Dame De Namur on February 19. Sophomore Irina Morozova has won four dual singles matches from the No. 1 position, she is also part of the best doubles pairing with junior, Gaby Verspieren, and they have a record of 6-4. Dominicans last two losses came against opponents San Jose State has scheduled. Southern Utah, who the Spartans defeated 6-1, took down the Penguins, 6-3 (counting each doubles match as a point), on March 9. Following that loss Academy of Art beat the Penguins, 8-1 on March 10.
Academy of Art record: 8-5. The Urban Knights come into this week’s play with a five match winning streak, too. Academy of Art had three wins in their Dixie State tournament victory, March 2-3. They also were victorious over Southern Utah, 8-1, on March 3. Playing from the No. 2 position, Amal Ben El Hadj leads the team with seven singles dual match wins.
Winning Streaks: The Spartans are on a current five match winning streak. Their last four match run was in 2008. Junior Chau Truong is on a streak of her own, winning five consecutive singles dual matches. The pairing of Sabastiani Leon Chao and Erica Medlin won their last five doubles dual matches.
Change It Up: San Jose State’s first-year head coach Sylvain Malroux changed his doubles pairings three times in the first four matches. Medlin/Leon Chao is the only Spartan duo to tally more than two wins in dual doubles play.
Doubles Wins: San Jose State is a perfect 6-0 this season when taking the dual doubles point in a match.
Play begins this Wednesday, March 14, at 2:00 p.m. against Dominican University at the Spartan Tennis Complex. Friday’s match will be held at the Decathlon Tennis Club, 3250 Central Expressway, Santa Clara, CA, starting at 2:00 p.m.
