San Jose, Calif. -- The
San Jose State women’s tennis team won their fifth straight match on Sunday,
March 11, 2012, beating Souther Utah University 6-1.
Southern Utah University
(3-3) could only compete with five players due to injury. It was the second
consecutive match that San Jose State (6-3, 1-0 WAC) started with a 1-0 lead
before play began.
In doubles, Chau
Truong/Alexis quickly disposed of the Thunderbird’s Ksusha Johnson /Lisa
Pleskan, 8-0. Sabastiani Leon Chao/Erica Medlin battled Alex Ivanova/Olia
Tatarchenko in a match that was back and forth but Spartans prevailed, 8-6.
“I was really happy with
the way our No. 2 (Truong/Marquez) played today,” coach Sylvain Malroux said.
“They came out with a competitive attitude and it showed in their play.”
San Jose State took four
of five singles matches. Truong backed up her solid doubles performance with a
dominating, 6-0, 6-1 win over Afton Staheli. Leon Chao was a straight set
winner from the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-2, over Ivanova. Freshman Jessica Willett
received her second singles dual match win of the year, beating Lisa Pleskan,
6-4, 6-2. Marquez won when her opponent, Olia Tatarchenko, retired before the
start of the second set.
“We are learning everyday
but it is a challenge when we played back to back days against teams of five
players,” said coach Malroux. “There are a lot of good teams coming up and many
matches in multiple days, so this weekend was a good test for our players.”
San Jose State now has a
five match winning streak. They will look to take it to six this Wednesday, March
14, against the Academy of Art. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at
the Spartan Tennis Complex.
