|Tennis Wins Third Straight|
Ruston, La. – The San Jose State women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches, beating Louisiana Tech, 6-1, Friday, March 2.
The Spartans (4-3, 1-0 WAC) were scheduled to play a second match against Grambling State, but rain cancelled the contest.
The Spartans started the day by winning the doubles point for the third consecutive match. Playing out of the No. 1 spot, Sabastiani Leon Chao/Erica Medlin took down Louisiana Tech’s Anna Zurek/Elne Bernard, 8-4. The San Jose State tandem improved to 3-1 in dual doubles competition this season. The freshman pair of Jessica Willett/Isadora Busch grabbed the other doubles victory defeating Alena Erofeyeva/ Laura Fernandez, 8-6.
“Overall, our doubles played well and is improving,” head coach Sylvain Malroux said following the win. “Sabastiani and Erica are working great together in doubles.”
“Our singles play was competitive. Everyone played hard and even in our only singles loss, it came down to the tie break.”
Led by straight set wins from Leon Chao and Medlin, who played from the No.1 and 2 spots, respectively, San Jose State won five of six singles matches. Busch won her four consecutive singles dual match when she beat Lady Techster Melanie Urvoy, 6-1, 5-7, 10-7.
“We are excited to come home now for two weeks to improve and continue competing,” Malroux added.
The Spartans will begin a four-match home stand starting Saturday, March 10, against Pacific. Play begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Spartan Tennis Complex, located at 12th and Humboldt streets.
