|Carter & Shamburger Lead Spartans To 2OT Win|
San Jose, Calif.-----Keith Shamburger scored 13 of his 21 points in the two overtime periods leading San Jose State to a 79-71 victory over Fresno State in a Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball game.
The Spartans (8-16, 1-8 WAC) ended a three-game losing streak and picked up their first conference win of the season.
San Jose State forward Wil Carter led all players in scoring with a career-high 23 and notched his second double-double in as many games with 12 rebounds.
Carter and Shamburger accounted for 22 of San Jose State's 24 points in the overtimes.
“It was our fourth overtime game this year and it was really good to have one go our way,” said San Jose State head coach George Nessman, whose team won its first overtime contest in 2011-12.
“In the game plan, we wanted to get Wil more touches. It’s been moving that way. It’s a little harder than you think sometimes, because he’s not a huge-sized guy who can knock people out of the way and get space. He has to work his way at the angles.
“Our guys were patient tonight which hasn’t been our characteristic. It was real good to see that discipline and patience start to emerge from our team.”
Overall, the Spartans’ inside players combined to make 14-of-17 field goals with Carter going for 9-for-10. San Jose State led 34-28 at halftime and had a 42-32 lead three minutes into the second half. The Bulldogs went on a 21-5 run over a 12-minute span and 53-47 with five minutes remaining.
Shamburger’s fearless 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left in the first overtime tied the game at 64-64 as the Spartans had to battle from behind the entire five minute period. Fresno State’s Kevin Foster missed a jumper at the buzzer that could have won the game for the Bulldogs (11-15, 3-7 WAC).
San Jose State, which lost an 83-81 overtime game to Hawaii five nights earlier, never trailed in the second overtime. Back-to-back Carter lay-ups off of two of Shamburger’s nine assists gave the Spartans a 70-66 lead. Fresno State closed the deficit to 72-71 after a Kevin Olekaibe 3-point basket, but Carter and Shamburger shut the door on the Bulldogs with the final seven points of the game.
The Spartans shot 48.1 percent from the field for the game and made 5-of-7 field goal tries in the two overtimes. The Bulldogs converted just 34.7 percent of their field goal attempts – their second lowest field goal percentage in conference play.
Olekaibe led Fresno State in scoring with 21 points, 11 fewer than what he scored against San Jose State when the two teams met in Fresno. Bulldogs’ center Jerry Brown scored 10 points and collected 13 rebounds before fouling out early in the first overtime.Fresno State vs San Jose State
