Bakersfield, Calif.— The San Jose State women’s tennis team beat Cal State Bakersfield, 6-1, in the Spartans' dual match opener on January 24.

In Sylvain Malroux's San Jose State (1-0) coaching debut, the Spartans won all three doubles and five of six singles matches.

Sabastiani Leon Chao won in the number-one singles spot with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Estefania Limpias. 

Juniors Chau Truong and Sandra Florea both picked up straight-set victories playing number two and six singles, respectively.

“We controlled the intensity, and our competitive level was great on every court,” said Malroux. “The tendency is to be nervous in your first match, especially for freshmen, but they did a very good job overcoming those nerves.”

Freshmen Erica Medlin and Isadora Busch were straight set winners in their major college dual match debuts. Medlin, in the number-three position, beat Bakersfield's Nancy Ramirez 6-1, 6-0. Busch topped Nelli Buiuklianova, 6-4, 6-2.

The win gives San Jose State its fifth in a row against Cal State Bakersfield dating back to the 2007-08 season.

Next, San Jose State hosts Santa Clara, at the Spartan Tennis Complex, Friday, January 27, at 2:00 p.m.
