Former Spartan women's golfer Juli Inkster added to her long
list of accolades and honors as she was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall
of Fame Monday night at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco.
Inkster was one of four inducted into the hall of fame as
she joined onetime USGA president Sandy Tatum, former 49er Dwight Clark and
former 49ers head coach Georg Seifert in this year's class.
One of the most successful players in the history of women's
golf, Inkster has won 31 LPGA titles in her career including seven major
championships. The 1984 Rookie of the Year was the first rookie in Tour history
to win two 'major' championships in one year capturing the Nabisco Championship
and the duMaurier Classic. She earned inclusion into the exclusive LPGA Hall of
Fame in 1999 and became the second woman in Tour history to complete the Grand
Slam of women's golf consisting of the Nabisco Championship, the LPGA
Championship, the United States Open and the duMaurier Classic.
At San Jose State, she was a three-time All-American with a
school-record 17 career tournament victories. Inkster was named the 1982
Broderick Award winner signifying the number-one college golfer in the country.
Concurrently, she became the second player in history to capture three
consecutive United States Women's Amateur championships with wins in 1980, 1981
and 1982.
"Juli is the greatest California female golfer of all-time
and perhaps in the country," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "She is a tremendous role model for all
female athletes and a wonderful person."
Inkster is the most recent San Jose State product to be
inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. Others with Spartan ties
include Bill Walsh (football), Lee Evans (track & field), George Haines
(swimmer), Pablo Morales (women's swim coach), John Ralston (football coach),
Tommie Smith (track & field), Ken Venturi (golf) and Billy Wilson
(football).
