San Jose, Calif.-----Kelly Stewart scored her only goal of
the match for San Jose State with 1:19 left in the fourth quarter giving the
Spartans an 8-7 win over Arizona State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation
women's water polo match.
The San Jose State win was the sixth in a row for the #7-nationally-ranked Spartans (14-8, 2-2 MPSF), third over a top-10 team this season and second against a team ranked above them during the winning streak. Arizona State (12-7, 0-2 MPSF) came into match ranked sixth in the latest coaches' national poll. "I'm thrilled with the way the team responded. We came out with great energy and our defense was outstanding," said San Jose State coach Lou Tully, who mentioned the Sun Devils roster contained eight international and four lefthanders among their field players. Tully also cited a defense keyed by field players Kathryn Hannum, Anna Natalizio and Kelly Stewart and anchored by goalkeeper Meagan Minson, who was credited with 10 saves. "The whole team maintained their poise. The game was tied in the third quarter and tied again in the fourth quarter. In those situations, you have to maintain your poise and they did," added the Spartans' coach. San Jose State led 5-2 in the second quarter after Adriana Vogt's second of three goals in the match. Sarah Harris' second goal of the match midway through the third quarter evened the contest at 5-5. Dani Curran, like Harris and Vogt, scored three times and found the net with her final score with 4:36 left in the match giving the Spartans a 7-5 lead. Harris tied the match at 7-7 with 2:02 remaining. Stewart's game-winner came on a 6-on-5 power play with only three seconds left in the player-advantage. San Jose State returns to action, Saturday, March 27, at Loyola Marymount. Match time is noon. San Jose State University Women's Water Polo The Aquatic Center, San Jose, Calif.
