Dec. 6 vs Denver Walt McPherson Court 2:00 p.m. PST CHASITY SHAVERS EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS IN FLORIDA: Chasity Shavers earned FAU holiday weekend All-tournament honors for her contributions in Boca Raton, Florida. In Friday's game against Mississippi, Shavers lead the team with 13 points and added three rebounds. On Saturday, Shavers had 10 points but also registered a career-high three blocks in a seven point loss to Fordham. SPARTANS DROP A PAIR IN THE FAU HOLIDAY WEEKEND TOURNAMENT: The San Jose State Women's Basketball team lost to SEC power Mississippi, 78-33 on Friday, and 71-64 to Fordham in Saturday's consolation game. The games were part of a weekend tournament which was hosted by Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton, Florida. THE SPARTANS LEAVE HOME WITH A WIN UNDER THEIR BELT: After trailing at halftime by seven, the San Jose State women's basketball team came out of the locker room and shot a blistering 78.3 percent from the field to defeat San Francisco, 63-51, last Tuesday night at The Event Center. For the game, San Jose State shot 61.9 percent from the field (26-42) including 18-of-23 in the second half. The Spartans held the Dons to just 26.8 percent from the field (15-56) which includes 22.2 percent in the second half (6-27). The win snapped a 17-game losing streak dating back to last season RADIO INFORMATION: The San Jose State-Loyola Marymount game will be broadcast live on 90.5 KSJS with the pre-game show starting at 6:45 p.m. Sports Director Justin Allegri and Delaney Caldwell will call the action. Fans out of the area can listen to the game on the station website, www.ksjs.org. LIVE STATS/VIDEO: Both of this weeks home games will have live stats and live video available through www.sjsuspartans.com. Live video is now available for free through the gold zone. TICKET INFORMATION: Tickets for all San Jose State home Women's basketball games are $5 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under. The ticket office opens one hour prior to tip-off at Walt McPherson Court or can be purchased by calling the San Jose State Athletics Ticket Office at 408-924-SJTX (7589). ABOUT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: The Lions (3-3) are under the guidance of the head coach Julie Wilhoit who is in her 15th year in charge. Wilhoit is the winningest coach in program history, with a record of 324-277. The lions are lead by sophomore Alex Cowling, who is averaging 15.3 points and 6.5 rebounds a game this season. Cowling is also the reigning WCC player of the week. Wednesday will be the first meeting in San Jose between the two teams. The Spartans and Lions have played twice in southern California, with both teams winning a game. 2007-08 A L 81-66 1993-94 A W 73-68 ABOUT DENVER: The Pioneers start the week with a 1-3 record but will play two times prior to Sunday's contest with the Spartans. The team is lead by 2nd year head coach Erik Johnson who has a 17-18 record as head coach. The Pioneers are led by junior Britteni Rice who is averaging 15.8 points a game. Sunday's game will be the first meeting between the two teams. SPARTAN HEAD COACH PAM DECOSTA: San Jose State head coach Pam DeCosta is in her third season at the helm of the Spartans with a record of 6-61. SPARTANS ARE EFFECTIVE BEYOND THE ARC: The Spartans enter the week shooting 37 percent from three point range, which is good enough for 2nd in the WAC. The stat is made more impressive by the fact that no Spartan ranks in the top-15 in individual three-point shooting. SHAVERS RANKS 5TH IN THE WAC IN SCORING: Chasity Shavers has led the Spartans in scoring in five of the first six games and is now averaging 15.2 points a game. Shavers heads into the week fifth-place in WAC scoring. ASHLEY BROWN IS 5th IN THE WAC IN ASSISTS: Brown's 3.20 assists-per-game is good enough to rank 5th in the conference heading into this week's action. SAYJA SUMLER HAS ACHIEVED TWO CAREER-HIGHS THIS SEASON: Sumler's five steals in Saturday's loss to Fordham matches her career-high which was achieved twice last season. Earlier this year in the teams' lone win against USF, Sumler set a new career high in assists, with seven. She enters the week in a tie for 3rd in the WAC in steals and 6th in assists-per-game. SHAVERS SCORES CAREER-HIGH 21 POINTS AGAINST CS FULLERTON: Chasity Shavers led the Spartans in scoring with a career-high 21 points in the season opener against Cal State Fullerton. Shavers was 9-of-13 from the field in the 79-77 loss in 22 minutes of play. TRANSFER SAMANTHA MAREZ CONTINUES TO SHINE IN HER FIRST SEASON: Transfer Samantha Marez remains in the top-10 in field goal percentage and led the team in scoring, with 13 points against Fordham over the weekend. Marez is averaging 9.5 points a game which makes her 2nd on the team behind Shavers. TWO NEWCOMERS WITH DOUBLE FIGURE DEBUTS: The Spartans had two newcomers in double figures on opening night. Samantha Marez came off the bench to score 16 points and grab five rebounds and Britney Bradley chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds. Marez, a 6-foot-3 junior transfer made a home in the paint in her debut going 8-of-12 from the field. Bradley, a 5-foot-8 junior transfer made 7-of-8 from the free throw line and led the team with her seven rebounds. RIDGE IS 9TH IN THE WAC IN BLOCKED SHOTS: Shaunna Ridge has five blocks on the season and is currently 9th in the conference. Ridge's season-high was two blocked shots against Pepperdine. RIDGE IS 9TH ON THE CAREER BLOCKED SHOTS LIST: Shaunna Ridge is now ninth on the career blocked shots list with 58, and sits just four away from seventh place. Ridge enters the week in ninth-place in the conference with five blocks. BLOCKED SHOTS G BS AVG WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN RENO: The 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held Wednesday thru Saturday, March 10-13 in Reno, Nev., at the Lawlor Event Center. SPARTANS PICKED TO FINISH EIGTH AND NINTH IN PRESEASON POLLS: San Jose State was picked to finish eight in the WAC Coaches Poll and ninth in the WAC Media Poll. UP NEXT: After Sunday's home game against Denver, the Spartans embark on a five game road trip that will take them into the new year. The trip begins in Berkeley on Wednesday, December 9, at 7:00 p.m. |
