Nov. 28 Boca Bridge Hotel Holiday Tournament vs. Fordham/FAU 2/4:00 p.m. EST SPARTANS LEAVE HOME WITH A WIN UNDER THEIR BELT: After trailing at halftime by seven, the San Jose State women's basketball team came out of the locker room and shot a blistering 78.3 percent from the field to defeat San Francisco, 63-51, Tuesday night at The Event Center. For the game, San Jose State shot 61.9 percent from the field (26-42) including 18-of-23 in the second half. The Spartans held the Dons to just 26.8 percent from the field (15-56) which included 22.2 percent in the second half (6-27). The win snapped a 17-game losing streak dating back to last season. SPARTANS HEAD TO FLORIDA TO PARTICIPATE IN TWO-DAY TOURNAMENT: The San Jose State women's basketball team will take on the University of Mississippi on Friday, in Boca Raton, Fla., in the first game of the Boca Bridge Hotel Holiday Tournament. The result of the Ole Miss game will determine whether the Spartans play Fordham or Florida Atlantic on Saturday. TICKET INFORMATION: Tickets for all San Jose State home women's basketball games are $5 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under. The ticket office opens one hour prior to tip-off at Walt McPherson Court, or tickets can be purchased by calling the San Jose State Athletics Ticket Office at 408-924-SJTX (7589). ABOUT MISSISSIPPI: The Rebels, led by head coach Renee Ladner are off to a 3-1 start to the young season. Senior guard Bianca Thomas is leading the Rebels with 23.8 points-per-game. The Rebels won the only meeting between the two schools77-43 during the 1999-00 season. Ole Miss is coming off a 65-59 loss to the University of Arizona on Monday. ABOUT FORDHAM: The Rams, led by fourth-year head coach Cathy Andruzzi, are off to a 2-2 start. A 76-60 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday got the Rams back to five-hundred. The Rams are led by senior forward Randall Hurst, who is averaging 20.8 points a game. The Spartans and Rams have never met in women's basketball. ABOUT FLORIDA ATLANTIC: The Owls are led by head coach Chancellor Dugan, and are 2-3 on the season after losing by 18-points to Kent State on Tuesday night. The Owls and Spartans have never met in women's basketball. SPARTAN HEAD COACH PAM DECOSTA: San Jose State head coach Pam DeCosta is in her third season at the helm of the Spartans with a record of 6-59. SHAVERS RANKS FOURTH IN WAC IN SCORING: Chasity Shavers has led the Spartans in scoring in all four games of the young season and is averaging 17 points a game. Shavers' 17.0 points-per-game average still ranks fourth in the Western Athletic Conference. ASHLEY BROWN THIRD IN ASSISTS: Ashley Brown's 4.00 assists per game is good enough to rank third in the conference. SAYJA SUMLER DISHED OUT A TEAM-HIGH SEVEN ASSISTS IN SPARTAN WIN: Sayja Sumler's seven assists in the win over USF was a team season-high and helped her get up to 6th in the WAC in assists per game. SHAVERS SCORES CAREER-HIGH 21 POINTS AGAINST CS FULLERTON: Chasity Shavers led the Spartans in scoring with a career-high 21 points in the season opener against Cal State Fullerton. Shavers was 9-of-13 from the field in the 79-77 loss in 22 minutes of play. TRANSFERS BRITNEY BRADLEY AND SAMANTHA MAREZ CONTINUE TO SHINE IN THEIR FIRST SEASONS: Transfer's Samantha Marez and Britney Bradley rank 1st and 2nd in three-point field goal percentage and have both reached double figures twice in three games. Marez is averaging 10.5 points a game and Bradley is averaging 7.5 points a game. TWO NEWCOMERS WITH DOUBLE FIGURE DEBUTS: The Spartans had two newcomers in double figures on opening night. Samantha Marez came off the bench to score 16 points and grab five rebounds and Britney Bradley chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds. Marez, a 6-foot-3 junior transfer made a home in the paint in her debut going 8-of-12 from the field. Bradley, a 5-foot-8 junior transfer made 7-of-8 from the free throw line and led the team with her seven rebounds. RIDGE IS 3RD PLACE IN BLOCKED SHOTS IN THE WAC: Shaunna Ridge has five blocks on the young season and is currently 3rd in the conference. Ridge has blocked at least one shot in all four of the team's games, including two against Pepperdine. Ridge is also 10th in rebounding with 6.3 a game. RIDGE IS 9TH ON THE CAREER BLOCKED SHOTS LIST: Shaunna Ridge is now ninth on the career blocked shots list with 58, and sits just four away from seventh place. Ridge enters the week in third place in the conference with four blocks. BLOCKED SHOTS G BS AVG WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN RENO: The 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held Wednesday thru Saturday, March 10-13 in Reno, Nev., at the Lawlor Event Center. SPARTANS PICKED TO FINISH EIGTH AND NINTH IN PRESEASON POLLS: San Jose State was picked to finish eight in the WAC Coaches Poll and ninth in the WAC Media Poll. UP NEXT: San Jose State returns home to Walt McPherson Court to host a pair of games next week. Loyola Marymount comes to town on Wednesday, December 2, at 7 p.m. and Denver comes in for a Sunday, December 6, at 2:00 p.m. |
