San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University women's basketball team fell to the visiting Pepperdine Waves, 83-66, despite getting a game-high 19 points off the bench from Chasity Shavers. Shavers, a senior guard from Lewisville, Texas, led the Spartans in scoring for the second straight game, shooting 8-of-18 from the field. A 15-0 run by the visitors midway through the second half, broke open a one-point game. With the loss, San Jose State falls to 0-2 on the young season. Pepperdine, a member of the West Coast Conference, improves to 2-0. A personal 5-0 run by Pepperdine's Katie Menton opened the contest. Marnesha Hall stopped that run by scoring four in a row herself, including a fast-break lay-up set up by a football pass by Shaunna Ridge. It was the Hall Show early. The Waves pushed ahead to an 11-8 lead with 16:44 to go, and hit the first media timeout with a 13-8 edge. The Spartans rained three-pointers out of the timeout, with Britney Bradley and Ridge hitting back-to-back triples to go up by one, 14-13. Ashley Brown broke down the defense and put in a jumper, cutting the lead to one at 17-16 heading into the second media timeout. Pepperdine went on a mini-run which stretched the lead to five points at 21-16 with just over 10 minutes to go in the half. Marez picked up her second and third fouls in quick succession out of a timeout, but drained a three-pointer moments later to bring the team back to within two at 23-21. Shavers, four days removed from a career-high 21 points against Cal State Fullerton, pulled the team to within two again with a hard drive to the hoop, also drawing a foul. The three-point play made it 25-24 in favor of the Waves. The Spartans reclaimed the lead with 6:11 to go in the half, 26-25, on a Ridge bucket, and Shavers came up with another three-point play to bring The Event Center crowd to its feet. The lead was stretched to six, San Jose State's largest on the night, on Alisha Eckberg's first bucket of the night at 4:41. The final media timeout of the half had San Jose State in the lead, 31-28. The Waves stormed back out of the break in the action to produce a 10-1 run and take a six-point advantage into the break 38-32. Ridge led the Spartans at the half with seven points, while Hall had six points and five boards. The teams combined for 35 turnovers, 19 by San Jose State. The Waves stormed out of the gate in half number two, scoring six unanswered points and pushing the lead to double digits for the first time. The lead was 44-32 after a quick Spartan timeout. Marez re-entered the game during the timeout and hit a big three-pointer and a layup, cutting the lead back to seven. The run continued on a Shavers jumper, cutting the lead to five with 15:32 left. A big Waves three by Lauren Bell led into a media timeout with a 47-39 game. Hall nailed a three-pointer out of the break to make it a 10-3 run. Shavers then sprung to life again, scoring six points in a row and pulling her team within one point at 49-48. The Waves stabilized, however, and went on a 15-0 run of their own for a 64-48 bulge at the 9:54 mark. A Marez bucket at 9:33 ended the stretch, with the margin at 14.
