San Jose, Calif.-----San Jose State University scored the first nine points of the game and was never threatened defeating William Jessup University, 89-63, in the Spartans' season-opening game.

Guard Justin Graham led San Jose State (1-0) in scoring with 18 points and handed out six assists. Three other Spartan starters scored in double figures. Freshman Chris Jones, making his debut, scored 13 points on 5-of-7 from the field. Center Chris Oakes scored 12 and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. Guard Adrian Oliver, the Spartans' leading scorer last season, added 11 and collected a single-game career best 11 rebounds.

Forward Kyle Thomas came off the bench and was a fifth San Jose State player in double figure scoring with 12 points.

The taller Spartans forced the visiting Warriors (0-5), a NAIA school, to shoot 30.8 percent from the field and out-rebounded their opponent, 62-26. Guard Jason Washington was William Jessup's top scorer with 17 points.

"We were ragged at times. We can't play that way and expect to succeed at Washington. We can't have those spells or Washington will take us out of the game," said San Jose State coach George Nessman, whose team faces the #14-ranked Huskies Friday night in Seattle.

"We're happy with the victory, but there are a lot of improvements possible," said Graham, who was 6-of-8 from the field.

San Jose State, which led 46-31 at halftime and by as many as 32 points twice in the second half, shot 46.0 percent from the field, but committed 21 turnovers in the win.
