THIS WEEK - WAC CHAMPIONS SEEK NCAA BERTH
The 2009 Western Athletic Conference regular-season champion San Jose State University women's soccer team is back in Boise, Idaho, for the second time in five days, for the WAC Tournament. This year's event is being hosted by Boise State University for the third time in the last five years, at the Boas Soccer Complex, from November 5-8. The top-seeded Spartans, now 11-5-3 overall, have earned a first-round bye, and will begin the tourney on Friday, November 6. Kick-off against No. 4 Nevada, a 1-0 winner over No. 5 New Mexico State in Thursday's opener, is slated for 11:30 a.m. PST. The championship game is set for a 12:00 p.m. PST start on Sunday, November 8, with automatic entry into the 2009 NCAA Championship once again at stake. The Spartans flew out of Oakland, Calif., directly on the morning of Wednesday, November 4, arriving in Boise just before 10:30 a.m. local time. They held a 90-minute training session after lunch, before heading to the league's annual awards banquet at night. They will train again on Thursday morning before taking in part of the first-day action as observers. The team, which is 5-3-2 on the road in 2009, is scheduled to return back into San Jose on Monday afternoon, November 9.

WAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
San Jose State is making its 10th Western Athletic Conference Tournament appearance, and fifth in a row. Its lone tournament title came in the 2000 season, when the team topped UTEP (2-0), SMU (4-2) and Tulsa (3-1) in Fresno, Calif., to earn its first and only NCAA Championship berth. The Spartans are 7-8-1 (.469) all-time at the conference event, with 18 goals scored and 19 against. Their last win came when they last had earned a first-round bye, as the No. 2 seed against fifth-seeded Nevada, 2-0, in a 2005 semifinal also in Boise, Idaho. San Jose State has since gone 0-4-1 in WAC tourneys, and is 1-2 all-time at the event when held at the Boas Soccer Complex. Of this year's participants, the Spartans are 0-3 against Fresno State all-time at WAC tournaments, 1-0 against Nevada, 0-1-1 against Boise State, and 0-1 against Utah State. Sixth-seeded Fresno State is the defending WAC Tournament champion.

ALL-WAC AWARDS
San Jose State was better-represented than ever before in program history at this year's post-season awards banquet, held in Boise, Idaho, on the eve of the 2009 WAC Tournament on Wednesday, November 4. Sophomore center back Jessica Ingram was chosen by the league's nine head coaches as the WAC Defensive Player of the Year, while second-year head coach Jeff Leightman was tabbed by his peers as the 2009 WAC Coach of the Year, the first Spartan leader to be so honored since Philippe Blin in 1996. Ingram, and seniors Emmy Belding, Roxy Kamal and Hallsie Pacheco made up a four-player first-team All-WAC contingent for the Spartans for the first time in program history. Nina Butera was an All-WAC second-team representative.

FIRST REGULAR-SEASON WAC TITLE
A little over an hour after the final whistle of San Jose State's 2-1 home triumph over Fresno State on Senior Night on Friday, October 30, Nevada's Cristen Drummond scored unassisted at the 104:51 mark for a double-overtime winner at New Mexico State, assuring the Spartans of their first regular-season conference crown in the program's history. San Jose State joined the WAC in 1996. The seven Spartan seniors accepted the regular-season trophy at the banquet on Wednesday night, November 4, in Boise, Idaho.

Nevada posted a program-best five WAC wins after getting off to an 0-5 start to its 2009 season. Junior Marie Cove (1.96 GAA, 74 saves) is the reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week, having played all 104:51 of a 1-0 win at New Mexico State on October 30 to notch her first shutout of 2009. Sophomores Natalie Ratnavira (five goals) and Annabelle Allen were All-WAC second-team selections.

San Jose State leads the all-time series, 8-2-1. The teams have met at least once each season since 2000. The Spartans have won each of the past three match-ups, 2-1 at Spartan Field in 2007 on current junior Kim Johnston's first college goal, 1-0 in Reno a year ago on an Emmy Belding strike, and again in Reno back on October 16, by the score of 3-1. San Jose State is 1-0 against Nevada in the post-season. The Wolf Pack's last win over the Spartans came at home, 3-1, on October 29, 2006. Jaime Frias is in his second season in charge at Nevada.

BEATING THE BULLDOGS
Prior to its 2-1 win on Senior Night on Friday, October 30, San Jose State had lost five straight matches against its rival, Fresno State, with four by 1-0 scorelines, and the other a 2-0 decision. The Spartans had not won since a 1-0 triumph over four years ago in Fresno on October 28, 2005. Before Roxy Kamal's wonder-strike at 3:56 early in this year's meeting, they had not managed a goal against Fresno State since that last win, spanning four-plus years, five-plus games and 497:04. No members of the current San Jose State team or staff, were with the program for that 2005 result.
