Stockton, Calif.-----Mark Hubbard fired a season-best four-under par 67 leading San Jose State University to a two-under par team score in the second round of the Pacific Invitational men's golf tournament. Hubbard posted his first under-par score of the 2009-10 season. Starting his round from the 10th tee, the junior from Denver bogeyed the 12th hole and then strung together five birdies in a 12-hole stretch. Hubbard and teammate Jay Myers are the top two Spartan individuals tied for 29th place at one-over par 143 in the 60-player field. Myers matched par with his 71 on the 6,757-yard Brookside Country Club course. Senior
Stephan Stallworth matched his best round of the season with a one-under par 70
as part of San Jose State's 282 team score in the second of the three-day,
54-hole tournament. The Spartans also counted Rosco Valentine's 74 and discarded
the 79 from Nick Brown. With a 578 total for 36 holes, San Jose State moved up to 11th place in the 12-team field. Oregon at 545 has a one-stroke advantage over UC Davis' 546. Fresno State at 554, Saint Mary's at 556 and Denver at 557 round out the top five teams. Unlike the opening round when there were only six birdies among the four counting Spartan scores, Hubbard, Myers, Stallworth and Valentine combined for 17 birdies in round two. Only Oregon, UC Davis, Fresno State and Denver had more under par holes count on their scorecards than San Jose State in the second round. Tyler Raber of UC Davis heads into the final round on November 4 as the individual leader. He had a bogey-free, eight-under par 63 on November 3. His 127 total is three shots better than Oregon's Eugene Wong. Robbie Fillmore of Brigham Young is third at 134. Third-round play begins at 7:30 a.m. (PST).
