San Jose, Calif.-----Bob Murphy, San Jose State University’s
director of men’s athletics from 1976 through 1978, is one of four new
inductees into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame.
Santa
Clara University All-America quarterback Ron Calcagno, field hockey Olympian
Sheryl Johnson from Stanford University and San Francisco 49ers great Ronnie
Lott join Murphy as the 2009 inductees.

set for November 11 at the HP Pavilion.
Murphy
joined the Spartans in 1976 after serving as the executive director of the
Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus in Columbus, Ohio. During his
stint as the men’s athletics director, the Spartans won the 1976 and 1978
Pacific Coast Athletic Association championships in football. His hires
included Jack Elway as football coach and Bill Berry as the men’s basketball
coach. Under his watch, construction began on the west side of Spartan Stadium
for an upper deck, private suites and a new press box.
The
1963 Stanford University graduate has many connections in the Bay Area
professional, college and amateur sports scenes. He was the Stanford University
sports information director responsible for quarterback Jim Plunkett winning a
Heisman Trophy. The longtime broadcaster retired from calling Stanford
University football and men’s basketball games in 2007.
