As 2008 unfolded, it appeared Jalal Beauchman was going to be a key contributor to the wide receiver group, possibly San Jose State University’s most productive unit on paper at the start of the previous football season. The 6-foot-4 junior from San Jose’s Bellarmine Prep had 34 receptions from in his last 10 games covering the end of the 2007 season into the first four contests in 2008. He appeared headed for a 40-plus catch season at a minimum. But the local product joined fellow starter Kevin Jurovich on the sidelines as injured for the remaining eight games of last season. Spartan quarterbacks lost one of their big targets going across the middle of the field capable of earning first down yardage. “When you’re out, it’s an uneasy feeling, because you want to help out the team. It builds up and up and really fueled me over the summer. I’m so excited to get back out on to the field. It was what I was waiting for nearly a whole year,” said the 220-pound wide receiver who believes he has increased his playing speed and can be another deep pass-catching threat for San Jose State in 2009. Beauchman characterizes effective route running and body positioning as the strengths he brings to the passing attack. He also recognizes the importance of blocking for his teammates. “The coaches gave us a challenge. We receivers seemed to rise to the challenge and take pride in our downfield blocking, because there is nothing better than seeing a running back break loose after a receiver makes a touchdown-producing block,” Beauchman stated. With Beauchman and newcomer Marquis Avery, the Spartans have a pair of 6-foot-4 wide receivers who tower over returning wide receivers Michael Avila, Josh Harrison, Jordan Johnson and Khalil Paden. Along with Jurovich, San Jose State can provide a variety of looks for opposing defenses throughout the season. The next chance to see how Beauchman and his fellow receivers run their routes and block for their teammates is Monday, August 10, when the Spartans begin practice at 4:00 p.m. on the practice field.
