MARQUIS AVERY

WR, 6-4, 195, JR

Anaheim, Calif./Fullerton College

One of the most productive wide receivers in the California Community College system in 2007, Marquis had 60 receptions for 766 yards and seven touchdowns last season for Fullerton College (Coach Gene Murphy). Avery was a 2007 first-team All-Mission Conference who caught 28 passes for 435 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman. He lettered in football (Coach Tim O’Hara) and basketball at Savanna High in Anaheim, Calif. Avery was a three-time, first-team all-league selection in football. He averaged 9.1 points and 10.9 rebounds a game for the 2004-05 Savanna boys varsity team and had a 21-point, 20-rebound effort in a 2005 win over Anaheim High.

Marquis enjoys writing poetry and won a prize in a 2004 citywide poetry contest. Avery also has performed on stage in Orange County under the stage name, Bishop, as a rap performer. He plans to major in sociology and has an interest in becoming a probation officer or a fire fighter. Marquis was born in Oakland, Calif., on July 9, 1987.

DICK TOMEY: “Marquis is a player (wide receiver) who probably is further along than David Richmond (JC transfer with 55 receptions in 2007), because he has played more football (than David) and is the same kind of basketball athlete. He probably walks in the door with as much toughness in terms of his ability to block and compete as any receiver we’ve had.”

DANIEL CARRILLO, JR.

DB, 6-1, 180, FR

San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS

A 2007 first-team All-Central Coast Section and San Francisco Chronicle honorable mention All-Metro choice, Daniel was named the West Catholic Athletic League Defensive Back of the Year. Carrillo, Jr., intercepted seven passes and was credited with 66 tackles his senior season and was named his team’s Most Valuable Player for Valley Christian High in San Jose (Coach Mike Machado). As a junior, he was a second-team all-league choice who was credited with nine interceptions. He was the school’s Junior Class Athlete of the Year in 2006.

The two-sport athlete also lettered in track and field as a long jump specialist, who qualified for the semifinals of the 2007 Central Coast Section championships. Daniel, Jr., who became interested in playing football at age 12, enjoys sketching and collecting vinyl records featuring rap artists and 1950’s performers. He plans to major in art. Daniel, Jr., a San Jose native, was born on August 8, 1990.

DICK TOMEY: “When I saw Daniel play (at Valley Christian), I was so impressed with the way he hit people, his quickness, ability to run and cover. His ability to make play is obvious. His hitting ability stuck out like a sore thumb.”

TANNER BURNS

S, 6-1, 185, FR

San Jose, Calif./ Valley Christian HS

A 2007 second-team All-Central Coast Section selection, Tanner is a safety prospect joining the Spartans this fall. Burns also was an All-West Catholic Athletic League first-team selection and his team’s Defensive Most Valuable Player during his three-season career at Valley Christian High in San Jose (Coach Mike Machado). He enjoys snowboarding and water skiing.

Tanner would like to follow in the footsteps of his dad, San Jose State defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator Keith Burns, and pursue a football-coaching career. Tanner’s older brother, K.C., is a pitcher for the 2008 San Jose City College team. Tanner was born in Houston, Texas, on November 8, 1989.

DICK TOMEY: “Tanner is someone we know very well. He’s a ‘gym rat.’ We like him as a person. We’ve watched him compete. We feel like he is somebody who will get bigger and stronger. He’s been very well coached at Valley Christian and is going to make a strong contribution to our program.”

RAYMOND RODRIGUEZ

DE/TE, 6-0, 245, FR

Boyle Heights, Calif./Los Altos HS

A two-time All-C.I.F. choice, Raymond will begin his college career this fall either as a defensive end or tight end candidate. Rodriguez led Los Altos High of Hacienda Heights, Calif., (Coach Greg Gano) in scoring as a junior with 56 points on nine touchdowns. In 2006, he caught 27 passes for 406 yards and eight touchdowns. In his senior season, he shared the team lead with 13 receptions including two for touchdowns. As a defensive end, he had 10 quarterback sacks as a junior and nine, his senior season.

The three-sport letter winner played three seasons of basketball and was a backstroke and butterfly specialist on the swim team. He is in his second year as a member of the school’s Leadership Club. Rodriguez, who plans to major in kinesiology, is interested in pursuing a college football coaching career. Raymond, a Boyle Heights native, was born in Boyle Heights, Calif., on February 28, 1990.

DICK TOMEY: “Ray Rodriguez is a terrific football player. He has outstanding position flexibility. He has wonderful feet and quickness for a big guy. He’s shown outstanding ability as a tight end and tremendous capabilities as a defensive lineman. It’s all about his quickness, athleticism and toughness. He’ll come in with outstanding strength for a high school player.”

TIUKE TUIPULOTU

S 5-10 185 FR

Menlo Park, Calif./Serra HS

A 2007 San Francisco Chronicle second-team All-Metro choice, Tiuke is a safety hopeful joining the Spartans in the fall. Tuipulotu was a running back and safety who also received first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League honors his senior season. He was third on his team with 49 tackles and added 2.0 quarterback sacks and 3 pass break-ups. As a junior, he was second on his team with 76 tackles (60 unassisted and 16 assisted) with 4 pass break-ups. As a running back, he rushed for 1,489 yards, averaged 8.7 yards per carry and scored 15 touchdowns his junior and senior seasons.

DICK TOMEY: “I’ve been watching football a long time. He’s as a good a natural hitter as anybody I’ve ever seen. He explodes into and through people. I’ve never seen anybody that was a better hitter than Tiuke. I am so fired up to have him with us.”
