SPARTAN NOTES: In his second season with the Spartans...joined the team for the 2008 spring semester...one of three left-handed pitchers on the 2009 roster...will again be a part of the weekend starting rotation, and compete for the Friday night position...lone Spartan to earn All-WAC honors a year ago in his first season of major college baseball, gaining selection to the second team, and also the lone SJSU representative on the 15-player 2009 preseason All-WAC squad.
2008: Made 16 appearances, 13 of them starts...was particularly effective in league contests, going 5-2 with a 3.69 ERA, third-best in the WAC, while striking out 35 opposing batters over 39.0 innings and eight appearances...all five winning decisions came against WAC foes...picked up All-WAC second team recognition...struck out 57 over 69.0 innings overall...opponents hit just .273 against him, seventh-best in the WAC...tossed his first major college shutout in game one of a home doubleheader against league foe Nevada (5/17), scattering six hits and one walk while striking out five, and garnering WAC Pitcher of the Week and Spartan Foundation Student-Athlete of the Week honors (5/19)...retired the first six batters in order and produced 1-2-3 innings in that game in the first, second, fifth and ninth innings, putting first-pitch strikes over on all three Wolf Pack hitters even in the ninth, and getting a pair of ground-ball outs, including a leadoff bunt back to him, and a popout to close it out...won at eventual national champion Fresno State (5/11), giving up just an unearned run on five hits and one walk over 7.0 innings, striking out five...in his last two regular-season starts, went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA over 16.0 innings pitched, with just 11 hits and one walk against him and 10 strikeouts...struck out a season-high nine over 7.0 innings against Louisiana Tech (4/19)...went at least 5.0 innings in eight of 13 starts...major college debut came in a home start against Cal State East Bay (4/26)...first major college win was over Sacramento State (3/15), when he allowed an unearned run on two hits and three walks, and struck out three, over 6.0 frames...went 2-0 in two starts against La. Tech, giving up three runs (2.25 ERA) on nine hits and 10 walks, with 17 strikeouts over 12.0 innings...was tabbed a Top Newcomer for the WAC by national publication, Baseball America, during the preseason...played for the Mat-Su Miners of the Alaska Baseball League in Palmer, Alaska, for the second straight summer, this time with teammate John Shaffer.
SAN DIEGO MESA COLLEGE: Played the 2007 season at San Diego (Calif.) Mesa College (Coach Kevin Hazlett)...named first-team All-Pacific Coast Conference as a freshman, posting a 7-5 win-loss record with a 3.61 ERA, one save and 81 strikeouts over 89.2 innings...made a team-high 17 starts among 19 appearances...guided San Diego Mesa (25-19, 18-7 PCC) to the conference championship, going 5-1 with one save in 56.2 innings in league play, allowing 43 hits and striking out 55...named the No. 9 prospect in the Alaska Baseball League by Baseball America after the 2007 summer playing for the Mat-Su Miners in Palmer, Alaska, for current Spartan assistant coach Jeff Pritchard...selected to the ABL All-Star Team as the Miners were named ABL co-champions with a 24-11 record.
WESTVIEW HIGH SCHOOL: Graduated in 2006 from Westview High School in San Diego, Calif., lettering in baseball (Coaches Beau Champoux, Mike Hymes) all four years...named first-team All-Palomar League, Palomar Co-Pitcher of the Year, first-team All-San Diego Union Tribune, Division II Pitcher of the Year and first-team All-Division II as a senior in 2006, when he went 10-3 with a 1.30 ERA in 90 innings thrown...guided the Wolverines to the 2006 Bully’s East Baseball Tournament title.
MAX: Majoring in sociology...wants to play professional baseball, and then coach...enjoys golf, fishing and watching college football...has one older brother, Kage Peterson...mother is Pam Peterson...Maxwell Taylor Peterson was born in Torrance, Calif., on June 27, 1988.
