SPARTAN NOTES: In his second season with the Spartans...local product who is one of three left-handed pitchers on the 2009 roster...tough competitor and winner at every level...will be a member of the weekend starting rotation for the second straight year, and compete for the coveted Friday night spot...coming off a stellar fall season...made two starts during the Spartan World Series, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA over 13.0 innings, with just one unearned run, seven hits and one walk against him, with 11 strikeouts.

2008: Made 14 appearances, 13 of them starts...tossed 83.0 innings, second-most on the team and seventh-most in the WAC, while leading the Spartans with 67 strikeouts, fifth-most in the conference...in his major college debut, a 7-6 home win over Utah (2/22), went seven innings and produced 11 strikeouts, the single-game season high for a Spartan pitcher in 2008, and tied for the second-best performance in the WAC...faced the minimum 18 batters over the first six frames, retiring 10 straight hitters from the third through the sixth...registered the team’s first complete game of the season in a 3-2 loss against BYU (3/6), throwing 8.0 innings...went 8.1 innings in a tough 3-1 home loss to Sacramento State (3/14), giving up two unearned run on eight hits, with seven strikeouts and no walks...earned first major college win to open a critical four-game set at then-first-place Sacramento State (4/11), throwing 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, and striking out four without a walk...other complete-game performance came in a seven-inning, mercy-rule affair at home against La. Tech (4/18), when he gave up just a fourth-inning solo home run among five hits, with one walk and nine strikeouts...retired the first nine batters to begin his road start at No. 3 Stanford (5/3), with two strikeouts, and finished with five strikeouts over 4.2 innings...third win was against Nevada (5/16) on the final weekend of the regular season...went at least 4.2 innings in every start, and also made his WAC Tournament debut with one inning of relief against Fresno State (5/23)...struck out at least four batters in 10 of his appearances...fielded all 24 defensive chances cleanly...did not pitch over the summer.

WEST VALLEY COLLEGE: Played baseball (Coach Mike Perez) at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif., for two years...selected to the junior college Northern California All-American Team and the All-Coast Conference South Division first team in 2007, posting an 11-2 record with a 1.98 ERA and a pair of saves...struck out 95 opposing batters and walked just 11 over 109 innings pitched during the regular season...made 14 starts among 21 appearances...was named the 2007 Community College Pitcher of the Year by the Santa Clara County Hot Stove Corporation at its 24th annual banquet on January 29, 2008...helped West Valley to second place in the South Division with a record of 35-9-1 overall and 21-4 in conference play...was a second-team All-Coast Conference South Division pick as a freshman in 2006, when he went 8-4 with a 2.59 ERA and a team-best 96 strikeouts against just 28 walks over 111.1 innings thrown...made a team-high 16 starts among 20 appearances for the South Division champions as they finished with a record of 35-8 overall and 21-4 in the league...played for the Maxim Yankees (Coach Jeff Thomas) during the 2007 summer, helping them to a 31-15 record, the Horizon Air Summer Series Engelken Division title, a runner-up placement at the 2007 Best of the West Invitational and a best-ever ninth-place finish at the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series in Wichita, Kan....went 2-3 with a 4.26 ERA for the Yankees, making four starts among five appearances and providing 21 strikeouts against 13 walks over 25.1 innings thrown.

SANTA CLARA HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered all four years in baseball (Coach Chuck Blair) at Santa Clara (Calif.) High School...earned first-team all-league honors his last two years and second-team all-league recognition as a sophomore...led the Bruins to a 22-11 record as a senior.

DAVID: Majoring in justice studies...interested in becoming a police officer after college...enjoys listening to country music...younger brother, Michael Berner, plays baseball at Santa Clara High School...also has one older brother, Gregg Jones, and one older sister, Tiffany Berner...father, Mark Berner, is the co-founder and Senior Vice President of Operations of AirPlay...mother, Jan Berner, is the owner of A Tasteful Affair Catering, based in Pleasanton, Calif....David Scott Berner was born in Santa Clara, Calif., on August 16, 1987.
