|Xavier Jones With Season-High 17 In Loss to NMSU|
San Jose, Calif.-----Guard Xavier Jones scored a season-high 17 points, but San Jose State went scoreless for a 7:30 stretch from the end of the first half into the beginning of the second half in a 67-57 loss to New Mexico State.
win for New Mexico State (18-8, 12-2 WAC) was its 12th in a row and
the ninth consecutive loss for the Spartans (9-15, 3-10 WAC).
San Jose State was ahead by as many as six, 21-15, its largest lead in its last nine games and led, 25-23 with 5:04 to go in the first half before New Mexico State took advantage of four Spartans turnovers in the last five minutes that ignited a 15-0 run and led to a 38-25 halftime deficit.
"Our guys came out with really good energy and ready to play, but I think we've been ready to play. I think it's been a question of avoiding that one three minute bad burst that we've had in the last eight or nine games," said San Jose State head coach George Nessman, who added the game plan offensively was to run on the taller New Mexico State team because of the Aggies' effective half-court defense. "We have a stretch where we can't dribble, pass, shoot or defend. We give up a run that is frankly discouraging to team.
"We regrouped, fought our way through it, but it is frustrating to play with a lot of energy and have a small stretch of the game determine the outcome."
The Spartans scoring drought
continued for the first 2:26 of the second half as San Jose State fell behind
48-25 before D.J. Brown hit a 3-point basket with 16:02 to go.
Daniel Mullings led four New Mexico State starters in double-figure scoring with 15 points. Forwards Banja Sy with 13 and Renaldo Dixon with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds and 7-foot-5 freshman center Sim Bhullar with 10 points also were in double-figure scoring for New Mexico State. Bullar also was credited four of the Aggies' 10 blocked shots - the fourth time this season New Mexico State blocked 10 or more shots in a game.
"Defensively, we keyed in on our original scouting report. We didn't do a good job early," said New Mexico State coach Marvin Menzies. "To give San Jose State credit, they were very aggressive. They attacked the basket and played with a lot of passion and kind of caught us off guard."
Chris Cunningham was San Jose State's only other double-figure scorer with 11 points. The Spartans made 36.4 percent of their field goal tries and were outrebounded, 43-27.San Jose State takes on Denver, Saturday, February 16, in a 7:00 p.m. home game at The Event Center.
