Freshman Riana Byrd and junior David Fales have been named the December San Jose State Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the Month, presented by Toyota Scion. Fales was also honored as the October Male Student-Athlete of the Month. In San Jose State's 29-20 Military Bowl victory over Bowling Green, Fales was named the game's Most Valuable Player. The Salinas, Calif. native completed 33-of-43 passes for two touchdowns 395 yards, among the top total yards by a quarterback in a 2012 bowl game. The win capped his record-setting season, in which he set seven San Jose State single-season records. In eight games in December for the women's basketball team, Byrd averaged 13.0 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. She also scored in double figures six times and had four double-digit rebounding performances. Byrd started the month with a 17-point, 19-rebound effort in a 73-63 win over Cal State Northridge. The 19 boards equaled The Event Center record, which was set in the 2002-03 season. For her play, Byrd was named the WAC Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 26-Dec. 2.
