San Diego, Calif. – Emily Schill scored a season-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds but the San Jose State women’s basketball team couldn’t match the University of San Diego (USD) Toreros blistering shooting and lost 91-52 in the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.
(3-1) shot 60 percent (39-of-65) from the floor while the Spartans managed just
27 percent (17-of-64) for the game.
With the score tied at 2-2 and 18:40 to go before halftime, San Diego went on a 16-to-0 run over the next five and one half minutes. They hit 9-of-11 shots with San Jose State making just two of its 13 attempts.
“That five minute stretch was really the difference tonight,” head coach Tim LaKose said. “They were knocking down their shots and we just couldn’t get a break.”
lead was pushed to 27 points (35-8) by the 6:53 mark. The Spartans (2-3) made a
push going to the half, outscoring USD 18-12 and trailed 47-26 at the break.
Schill had eight of her 18 points at the half, on 4-of-4 shooting. Ta’Rea Cunnigan who would finish with a team-high 20 points had nine as the teams went to the locker room.
second half saw more of the same for both teams. The Spartans shot 20 percent (6-of-30) but went to the foul
line 22 times, knocking down 14 of their attempts. The Toreros made 19-of-33 shots (58 percent).
The Spartans got the lead down to 18 points with 18:30 to go, 49-31. But a 27-5 run over the next nine minutes in USD’s favor sealed San Jose State’s fate.
Toreros had 11 players in the scoring column led by Katelyn McDaniel’s 20
points. Sophia Ederaine had 15 and
Maya Hood chipped in 10.
“I was pleased with the fact that we forced 22 turnovers, had 11 steals and out rebounded them on the offensive glass. We went to the line more than they did, but overall they beat us on the boards (48-to-36) and, plain and simple, they scored a lot of easy buckets. That was the difference.”
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, December 1, when they open a four-game home stand against Cal State Northridge. The tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. in The Event Center.
